  2. Upgrades and Outages • Web hotel upgraded 5/14 • Avoided WBOB outage • New hardware (V240) and OS (9) • WBOB power outage 5/20 • UMCal and GopherMail services pointed at servers in 90 Church • LIND power outage 5/27 • New T2000s installed for cluster tests

  3. GopherMail Enhancements • Compose in separate window • Better integration of Address Book/LDAP search in Compose • Improved attachment handling (e.g. view image without downloading) • Improved search interface • Restructured HTML/CSS for better accessibility

  4. Rate Limiting at Work • IP 66.216.88.85 connected on 5/22 at 8:51am • Already on SORBS as known spammer • Limited to 1 recipient/hour • 3 messages accepted (8:51am, 9:51am, and 10:51am) • IP appeared on XBL at 10:53am, CBL at 11:17am • Of 16048 recipients: 7001 temperr’d, 7110 blocked, 1561 unknown users, 242 inactive, 118 accepted(3 normal, 107 allow all mail, 8 permit sender)

  5. Phishing Spam • Phishing e-mail sent Sat 5/20 between 0700 and 0800 • Originated from premium interactive server (garnet) • Targeted 75,000+ U of M recipients • Account upgrades now manually reviewed

  6. Proposed OutboundRate Limiting • Authenticated SMTP gateway users limited based on internet ID • Mail relay users limited based on IP address • Exceptions for bulk e-mail senders • Default rates determined by evaluating current usage
