  13. The Sea Around Us • Rachel Carson • May 27th, 1907-April 14th, 1964 • Alternative fall break was a celebration of her 100th birthday and the accomplishments she made in her lifetime.

Impact of Going Coastal • By actually getting our “hands dirty” and seeing first-hand the array of garbage in the marsh, we realized the difference just a few hours of clean-up with just a small group can actually do for the environment. • 40+ bags of trash accumulated in just under two hours. • Soda cans, fireworks, wrappers, oyster netting, a flip flop, just to name a few. • Some good came out of it: A baby terrapin turtle caught in the netting was released! • ‘Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts”- Rachel Carson
