  1. Goals of the Conservative Movement • Shrink the size of the federal gov. & reduce spending • Promote family values & patriotism • Stimulate business by reducing gov. regulations & taxes • Strengthen defense

  2. Election of 1980 • Ronald Reagan • Effective candidate • Career as an actor had him in the public eye • The Great Communicator • Clear cut answers • Simplified issues • Only 52% voted but Reagan won almost 500 electoral votes

  3. Assassination Attempt • March 30, 1981 • Reagan & 3 other staff members were wounded • “I hope you fellas are Republicans.”

  4. The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act • Passed under President Bill Clinton & requires background checks on some gun purchases • From 1994- 2009, 1.9 million firearm purchases were blocked by the system

Reaganomics (Supply side economics) • People pay fewer taxes- save more money • Banks make more loans to businesses- invest to improve productivity • Supply of goods increases & prices fall • Congress lowered taxes by 25% during Reagan’s term with the rich receiving the largest cuts • “trickle down economics” • The rich got richer and poverty increased for others
