3. About Our Class: Our English class will meet daily from 8:17 – 9:46 am (periods 2 & 3). Typically, we will schedule our time together in the following way: 1. Reading Workshop (45-60 minutes) - Minilesson - Workshop 2. Break (3 minutes) 3. Word Study (10 minutes) 4. Writing (15-25 minutes)

4. What will we read and learn about this year? We will read: individual books, partnership books, small group books, nonfiction, fiction, historical fiction, plays, poems, articles, magazines, short stories… We will learn about: grammar, vocabulary, text structures, punctuation, selecting books, making predictions, making inferences, active reading strategies, comprehension strategies, reading fluency, reading stamina, theme, figurative language, informational writing, argument writing, narrative writing, memoir, autobiography…

5. Individual Reading Books Get excited for lots of reading! Your homework for this class is to read at least 30 minutes a night from an individual reading book and to record your reading in your reading log. You are expected to bring this book with you to class everyday. We will also use this book for our Reading Workshop and Reading Journals. You will need to have your first outside reading book by Friday August 30st. You will be provided time in class to complete this assignment using the classroom library.

Grading Policy: • Class Activities & Assignments... 60% • Tests, Quizzes, & Projects … 30% • Homework… 10% Students will read and log a minimum of 30 minutes per night from their individual reading book. Reading completion will be monitored through reading journals. Students will frequently complete other homework assignments based on their independent reading books, which will be included in this category as well. Other Considerations: • Participation/Preparation: Student participation and preparation will be reported through parent communication and behavior standards on report cards. A student’s participation marks on behavior standards will reflect their contributions to class exercises and discussion, group work, and attentiveness. The student should demonstrate a willingness to learn and a high level of motivation. Students are prepared if they have brought their outside reading book, pencil, notes, handouts and any assignments that are being worked on or are due. • Redo: Students will be allowed to redo assignments and retake assessments (with teacher discretion). • Late Work: Students will be allowed to make-up late work at any point in time. A standard deduction of 10 points will be taken off for late work (please note, this is a one-time deduction, not a per day late deduction). • Missing Work: Missing work will be recorded as a score of 50 (F). • Failing Work: Failing work will be recorded as a score 50 (F).

7. Procedures: Report to class on time and prepared. For this class you will need a binder and reading journal that I will provide you with. These materials will likely be kept in the classroom. You will also need to have your individual reading book, reading log, and pencil. Upon entering the room, please read the board for important directions about where to go and what to bring. Most days, we will begin class with a minilesson in the meeting area. Please report to the meeting area quickly and quietly.

8. Procedures: You will go to the bathroom before or after class. In an emergency, please speak with a teacher about using the bathroom. You must ask permission to leave the class for any reason, including getting a drink. Please take the hall pass if you are given permission. If the hall pass is in use, wait until it is returned before leaving. You may not leave during the minilesson. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you have missed from one of your classmates or teachers. If there were any handouts given, they will be waiting for you in the absences folder. You may also find pertinent information on my teacher web page. The number of days you are absent will be the number of days you have to make up any work.

9. Rules: Respect your teacher and your classmates. Do not distract the teacher from teaching or the students from learning. Arrive to class on time, prepared, and ready to work to your full potential each day. Follow all directions the first time they are given. All rules set forth in the HKMS student handbook apply in this classroom.

10. Consequences: First Offense – Warning. Second Offense – Lunch detention and phone call home. Possible blue slip. Third Offense – Field trip to Mr. English’s office. Possible pink slip.

11. Rewards: A teacher may reward you with a ticket if you are behaving in an exceptional manner, working hard, and following directions. 3 Tickets – Candy 8 Tickets – Homework Pass Break Time is also a reward that may be added to or taken away from.

12. Assignments: You must have you first outside reading book in class with you on FRIDAY August 30st. Summer Reading Assignment is due FRIDAY September 6th.
