  1. Green IT – The Next Big Thing

  2. What is Green IT? • Consciously making choices to: • Minimize the carbon footprint of computer • Minimize networking hardware from “cradle” to “cradle” • Minimize energy consumption of computer devices during their life cycle

  3. Significant Pressures To Go Green • Economic – • Cisco suspended all travel not relating to customers • Perot Systems, $130m travel budget in 2008, significantly cut for 2009 • Social and environmental – landfill issues • Technological – data centers consume 1.5% total electricity generated (Source: Charles Bess, EDS) • Political – legislative and regulatory IT contributes to e-waste and to CO2 emissions

  4. Green IT Solutions Reduce Travel Through: • Telepresence • Unified messaging technologies – integrate various forms of communications • Online/hybrid courses and other online content For every 3 meetings held by video conference instead of flying cross country, it would be like taking a car completely off the road for an entire year (saving CO2) – Live Earth

  5. Governor at virtual ribbon cutting Gov. Rick Perry in Austin, TX, (right) attended a ribbon cutting at Alliance Center for Collaborative Learning, Research and Communications Technology In Richardson, TX (near Dallas).

  6. Green IT Solutions Minimize Power Consumption • Through virtualization • Person to person • Person to work • Work to work • Through the conscious design of networks using the most energy-efficient equipment possible

  7. Green IT Solutions Support Energy Conservation Through: • Metering of energy within buildings through the use of sensors on the converged network Source: Energy meter from Green Shop, UK Sensor to monitor energy in a building (UC Berkeley Photo)

  8. Green IT Solutions Support Digital Signage • To replace the massive amount of papersignage and labor to distribute them within business, including large retail concerns Warner Village Cinema in Taipei (Photo by John C. Wang of digiSignage)

  9. What creates the largest amount of Carbon Dixoide? • 450 watt server running 3,942 kWh/year • Toyota Camry traveling 12,000 miles/year • Commercial airliner making 6 round trips between Boston and Los Angeles Source: Charles Bess, EDS

  10. The server! • 5.3 tons CO2 • 4.4 tons CO2 • 4.4 tons CO2 Source: Charles Bess, EDS

  11. Summarizing Green IT Solutions • Reduce travel (video conferences) • Minimize power consumption (energy efficient equipment) • Allow for metering of energy (sensors) • Replace paper signage (digital signs) • Lessen environmental impact of network hardware (no PCs, cables, plastic computer cases in dumps) • Provide telecommuting options (home office, DHTI) • Unified communications & virtualization
