  1. UnityPsalm 133:1-3

Introduction • The subject of this psalm is unity • Specifically, harmony among God’s people • Psalmist describes it as good and pleasant • Like the anointing oil or the dew on the mountains of Zion- V3 • Unity provides great blessings • It is essential to having peace among brethren • It strengthens those who have it- Eccl. 4:12 • It is appealing and persuasive- Jn. 17:21 • Let us consider the unity of believers in Christ

Unity of Faith • Unity requires agreement- Amos 3:3 • Faith is the beginning point of unity • There is only one faith- Eph. 4:4-6 • The faith “once delivered” to the saints- Jude 3 • It is the gospel of Christ, His New Testament • The common standard and source of authority for the church and individual christians • Unity of faith will produce unity in other areas

Unity of Judgment • We don’t have exactly the same thoughts, opinions or evaluations • But we can have a common understanding of good and evil • Of what is lawful and what is sinful • Paul’s plea to the Corinthians- I Cor.1:10 • That comes from following the same standard • Requires the members of the church have a knowledge of God’s word

Unity of Worship • Worship in harmony with God’s nature • Worship in spirit and truth- Jn. 4:24 • According to the New Testament pattern • Without addition or subtraction • Singing, praying, teaching, the Lord’s supper and giving on the 1st day of the week • All done sincerely from our hearts • This honors God and strengthens christians

Unity of Doctrine or Teaching • All teaching should be “sound doctrine”- Tit. 2:1 • Which produces and maintains spiritual health • Speaking as the “oracles of God”- I Pet. 4:11 • Teachings from men make one’s religion vain- Mt. 15:8-9 • Pushing personal opinions will disturb and divide the church- II Tim. 2:23 • The wisdom that is from above produces peace and unity-Jas. 3:17

  7. Unity of Practice • The New Testament provides complete pattern of good works for local churches and individual christians- II Tim. 3:16-17 • Onlythreecollective areas of work for the church 1. Evangelism- Acts 13:3 2. Edification- Mt. 28:20 3. Benevolence to some needy members- Acts 6:1 • Other works are without Christ’s authority- Col. 3:17 • These have and will cause dissension and division in His church

Unity Is Possible • Unity is difficult, division is easy • Israel of old was divided • “Christendom” today contains thousands of different churches • The church of Christ is divided • Jesus prayed for our unity- Jn. 17:20-21 • The Jerusalem church was united- Acts 4:32 • It is still possible today • It requires the effort of every member

  9. Requirements for Unity-1 • Humility and meekness- Eph. 4:2 • That puts the church and others before self • Pride will cause division- III Jn. 9 2. Patience with other christians 3. Proper Submission • To Christ’s word in all things- Jn. 14:15 • Submission to other christians- I Pet. 5:5 • To those who have authority in the church- Heb. 13:17

  10. Requirements for Unity-2 4. Love for the truth • That will defend it and oppose all error- Jude 3 5. Love for brothers and sisters- I Pet. 1:22 • A love that values and honors every member • That will not discourage or alienate any 6. Appropriate discipline • Including self-discipline- I Cor. 9:27 • And rejecting those who are divisive- Tit. 3:10

In Conclusion • Religious division is contrary to Christ’s will- Jn. 17:21 • Those who cause division sin against the Lord and other believers • Let us strive to maintain “the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace” in this congregation- Eph. 4:3 • Let us pursue those things that make for peace- Rom. 14:19 • Are you a christian? • If not, we urge you to become one this morning
