August 15 th , 1969. Well come on all of you big strong men, Uncle Sam needs your help again,. he got himself in a terrible jam, way down yonder in Vietnam,. put down your books and pick up a gun, we're gunna have a whole lotta fun. and its 1,2,3 what are we fightin for ?

  3. he got himself in a terrible jam, way down yonder in Vietnam,

  4. put down your books and pick up a gun, we're gunna have a whole lotta fun

  5. and its 1,2,3 what are we fightin for? don't ask me I don't give a dam, the next stop is Vietnam,

  6. and its 5,6,7 open up the pearly gates.

  7. Well there aint no time to wonder why...WHOPEE we're all gunna die.

  8. now come on wall street don't be slow, why man this's war a-go-go,

  9. there's plenty good money to be made, supplyin' the army with the tools of the trade

  10. just hope and pray that when they drop the bomb, they drop it on the Vietcong

  29. Vietnam Divides the Nation

  30. The Credibility Gap • As the war progressed, reports from the US government claimed that the war was going well and nearly won • News reports showed otherwise • Difference between what the government was saying and what was really happening became known as the credibility gap • Created a distrust for the government by the American people • Vietnam on TV video

  31. Teach-Ins • College professors across the country began to oppose the war • Established teach-ins • Informal discussions between professors and students about the war and the reasons why it was wrong • Helped spread opposition to the war across the country • Teach-In

Opposition to the Draft • During the Vietnam War, students in college could defer their draft call until they graduated • Resulted in a large portion of the military being made up by low-income individuals and minorities • Draft became associated with racism • Protests against the draft began to grow • Burning of draft cards (video) • “Draft Dodging” • Leaving the country to avoid being drafted

Hawks & Doves • Not everyone opposed the war • 53% of Americans supported stronger action in 1968 • Thought the anti-war protesters were un-patriotic • Became known as the “Hawks” • Anti-war protesters were a loud minority • Only 24% of Americans in 1968 wanted an end to the war • Became known as the “Doves” • Differences in opinion about the war divided the nation
