  1. Libertarianism Respecting and upholding the voluntary choices made by consenting adults.

  2. Steve Nash’s Salary

  3. "Taxation of earnings from labor is on a par with forced labor" (Nozick)

  4. Ownership I own myself I own my labour I own the fruits of my labour

  5. Ownership Slavery (denying that I own myself) Forced Labour (taking my Labour) Taxation (taking my earnings)

  6. Ownership Do we own ourselves?

  7. Libertarianism • Central claim: "each of us has a fundamental right to liberty--the right to do what we want with the things we own, provided we respect other people's rights to do the same” (We own ourselves) • The state should be minimal • Favor free markets and oppose government regulation in the name of human freedom

  8. The Minimal State One that enforces contracts, protects private property, and keeps the peace is all that is needed. Rejects: • paternalism (laws to protect people from harming themselves ex: seatbelts, helmets); • morals legislation (laws that promote virtue ex: no prostitution laws); • redistribution of income or wealth (taxes that subsidize housing or healthcare)

  9. Free Market Philosophy • Nobody should be forced to help other people • Economic inequality is okay • Two requirements for economic justice: justice in initial holdings (was it legitimately yours?) and justice in transfer(did you make the money in a free exchange?) • If an inequality results from this system, then it is not unjust.

  10. Self-Ownership • Has implications for: • reproductive freedom, sexual morality, privacy rights, assisted suicide • If you own yourself, who can tell you what to do?
