  2. The Lord's Supper in the light of Passover

  3. Lord's SupperMat 26:26-29; Mark 14:22-24; Luke 2:19-20; 1 Cor 10:16-17, 11:23-26

  4. Mat 26:18, “And He said, “Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is near; I am to keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.”’”w/ Mark 14:12-14; Luke 22:7-11

  5. Why the Passover: Ex 12:1-36 a) Nation of Israel in bondage in Egypt b) Prayed for deliverance c) Moses sent to become the deliverer d) Plagues caused the ultimate release of the nation Israel

  6. PassoverThey sprinkled the blood of the lamb with a Hyssop reed on the door post and lentil.

  7. Leaven RemovedThe home had to be cleansed from all leaven (sin).1 Cor 5:6-8

  8. WashingWashed their hands in a special laver and towel. John 13:2-17 Jesus washed the disciples feet (humility)1 John 1:9

  9. Lighting CandlesLit by the woman of the House - God brought the Light into the world through the woman.

  10. First CupSanctification - bringing His people out from under the yoke of slavery and setting them apart for Himself. Ex 6:6

  11. Ex 6:6, “Say, therefore, to the sons of Israel, ‘I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their bondage. I will also redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments.”

  12. Jesus Christ establishes the Church and sanctifies all believers.John 3:16-17

  13. Bitter HerbsDipped in salt water representing the remembrance of their toil and tears while in bondage.

  14. Second CupDeliverance - from the 10 Plagues. A portion spilled, (wine = joy). The spilling rep. the diminished joy in the suffering of others.Prov 24:17

  15. AFIKOMENUnleavened bread kept in a white linen bag with three compartments. Remembrance of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Gen 22:2

  16. Jesus Christ, the middle Person of the Trinity, was broken on the Cross (died physically), wrapped in linen and put in the tomb. Later rose from the dead.

  17. The BreadSame bread we use in the Communion.It is without leaven.It is bruised and striped.It is pierced through.

  18. Isa 53:5, “But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed.”w/ John 6:32-35

  19. Third CupRedemption - Purchasing the nation Israel through the shed blood of the sacrificial Lamb. Protection of the 1st born passed over by the Angel of Death. Ex 12:7-13

  20. Jesus chose the Third Cup to show His blood would be shed for us = His spiritual death. Mat 26:28; Mark 14:24; Luke 22:20

  21. Mat 26:28,“For this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.”

  22. Fourth CupCompletion - The taking of His people and establishing His kingdom.

  23. Jesus never drank from the fourth cup during the celebration in the Upper Room. Why?Mat 26:29-30

  24. There is a connection between the Passover and the self sacrifice which established the New Covenant. Mat 26:28; Luke 22:20

  25. Mat 26:28, “For this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.”

  26. Luke 22:20,“And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.”

  27. Mark 14:26,“After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.”

  28. Jesus did not intend to conclude the Passover yet. He pledged not to drink of the vine until the Kingdom of God comes. Mat 26:29; Mark 14:25; John 3:14, 7:37-39, 8:28, 13:31

  29. John speaks of images of the Kingdom and Passover in depicting Jesus' trials and Passion, a better understanding of “IT IS FINISHED”John 19:30

  30. Jesus Christ, the King, the spotless sacrificial Lamb, in His hour of glory on the Cross said, "I am thirsty", John 19:28.

  31. “It is finished” relates to the words He spoke fulfilling the scripture, “I am thirsty”

  32. Psa 69:21,“They also gave me gall for my food and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.”

  33. Following His expression of thirst, the guards gave Him a sponge full of sour wine on Hyssop and held it to His mouth. John 19:29 w/ Ex 12:22

  34. Jesus refused wine offered in Mark 15:33 before being nailed to the Cross.

  35. When “It was finished” He drank the sour wine.John 19:30; Mat 27:48; Mark 15:36; Luke 23:36

  36. John 19:30, "Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.”

  37. The Passover was finished!Jesus transferred the Passover sacrifice of the Old Covenant into the New Covenant in His blood.1 Cor 5:7-8

  38. 1 Cor 5:7, "Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed. 8Therefore let us celebrate the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth."
