  1. Task 24 “ Wind Energy and Hydrogen Integration” 60 th Ex-Co Meeting May 2009 San Francisco Mr. Ismael Aso Industrial Engineer (Saragossa University) European Master in Renewable Energies (CIRCE) PhD “Renewable Energies and Energetic Efficiency (Saragossa University) R & D Aragon Hydrogen Foundation (SPAIN)

  2. INDEX Task 24 Description • Objectives • Prior Steps • Members • Activities last 6 months. • Case Studies Interest in Spain related to Wind/Hydrogen Final Questions for the Ex-Co

  3. OBJECTIVES TASK 24: To explore in detail all possible issues (Technical, Economical, Social, Environmental, Market and Legal) related to hydrogen production using electrolysis with wind energy. To explore in detail possible applications for hydrogen produced by electrolysis using wind energy, with special emphasis on full wind & hydrogen integration by means of hydrogen storage and electrical conversion that balances the original wind energy production, allowing an approach to demand that closes the gap with conventional energies. Subtask A: State of the Art Subtask B: Needed Improvements and System Integration Subtask C: Business Concept Development Subtask D: Applications. Emphasis on Wind Energy Management Duration : 2006-2010

  4. PRIOR STEPS 53rd IEA HIA ExCo meeting (Singapore, November 2005): Interest on new task on “wind energy & hydrogen integration”. The Spanish representative takes the lead. 54th IEA HIA ExCo meeting (Lyon, June 2006):Dr. Luis Correas (Fundación Hidrógeno Aragón) and Mr. Fernando Tamayo (Gamesa Energía),presented afirst draftof the new task. Project Definition Meeting (Brussels, 4th October 2006):attendance of 15 people from 7 countries. Revised draft with a matured work plan proposal. Pending confirmation of participation, especially from electrolyser manufacturers. 55th IEA HIA ExCo meeting (Petten, November 2006): the Task is finally approved by the ExCo, and a kick-off meeting was made for spring 2007 – Huesca , in order to confirm participation. 56 th IEA HIA EXCo Meeting (Rapperswill, May 2007): First SAR showed and first Meeting , Canary Island October 2007 57 th IEA ExCo Meeting (Montecatini, November 2007): First annual report. 22. Possible scenario which can happen 2010… Why so Interest in Spain? P.O. 3.7: Programming of non-dispatchable renewable energy. The Operator of the Electrical System can reduce (curtail) the wind energy produced on behalf of the stability of the grid 7.716 MW Nuclear + 70 % Wind Power Install 20.155 MW = 21.824 MW

  26. Final Questions for the Ex-Co: • New Zeeland will join task 24. • No formal position about Gamesa as Operagent Agent phase II Aragon Hydrogen Foundation assume this role for all task • Encourage Ex-Co members to propose new members for task, mainly private companies (case IHT Switzerland) … France, Norway, etc.
