At the end of this presentation… • You will learn about the Treat me well campaign. • You will know that people with a learning disability have the right to ask for reasonable adjustments when in hospital. • You will know what reasonable adjustments are and why they are important. • You will learn how to sign up to support our campaign!

  3. What is Treat me well about? • Helping hospitals to get better at supporting people with a learning disability • It is a3 year campaign • Mencap will work with local people and advocacy groups all around the country 3

  4. 2 minute challenge How many people can you name that you would find working in a hospital?

  6. Health: what are the issues? Lots of people have said they felt ignored by staff at the hospital. Some people said they struggled to understand their doctor or nurse. Lots of jargon words were used.

  7. Health: what are the issues? Some doctors and nurses still don’t know enough about learning disability. Lots of hospital staff said that having learning disability training would help them.

  8. Health: what are the issues? Some people are not getting reasonable adjustments when in hospital. Some people are dying because they didn’t get the right care in hospital (Learning Disability Mortality Review).

  11. Amy can eat her food independently. Owen needs some support to cut up his food into smaller pieces. Sonya has a special diet where her food needs to be very soft.

  14. Amy finds it very hard to read difficult words and long sentences. Owen has poor eyesight and can’t read very well. Sonya doesn’t use speech.

Having a Learning Disability Acute Liaison nurse 10. Better physical access and help to get around the hospital

  21. Amy gets upset when there is lots of noise. When she goes to hospital, she finds herself in a busy waiting room. The loud noise makes her feel upset. What reasonable adjustment could you give Amy? Amy

  22. Amy You could help Amy by: Offering her a quiet space to wait in. Have Amy seen by the doctor quickly, so she doesn’t have to wait long. Can you think of anything else?

  23. Owen Owen needs to go to hospital every year for a check up. He needs support to understand what he is being told by his doctor. What reasonable adjustment could you give Owen?

  24. Owen You could help Owen by: Giving him a double appointment. Using simple words and no jargon. Sending him hospital letters in Easy Read. Can you think of anything else?

  25. Sonya Sonya is unable to speak. Her mum uses Makaton to communicate with her. Sonya needs to have an operation. She hasn’t been to the hospital ward before. She is scared. What reasonable adjustment could you give Sonya?

  26. You could help Sonya by: Putting her in touch with the Learning Disability Liaison Nurse. Showing her a picture book about the operation she needs. Invite Sonya to visit the hospital ward before the operation, so she knows where she will stay. Can you think of anything else? Sonya
