  16. 1. The Mysterious Bump Teacher's Notes Slide 1 is here so you can visit the ‘Mysterious Bump’ without showing slide 2 which might give away the mystery. On the map, try moving away (drag the map) from the fort, there are Roman roads marked. On the Coflein site simply click on each photo to enlarge it. Slide 3 Can you see crop marks, darker green over deep soil (old ditches) and lighter grass which has dried out due to the shallower soil (walls just beneath the surface)? Can you see the crop mark showing the Roman road leading into the bottom left corner? Slide 7 The low angle of the sun helps reveal the bank which still exists around the perimeter of the fort site. Can you see any crop marks? Why not? Slide 11 This is the mysterious bump – the remains of the rampart of the huge Roman fort that was built here. Slide 14 What can you see? Why is there a ridge from the main road to the station? How long has it been there? The gate in the S wall was where the brown gate and level crossing signs are. You can see the dip in the ridge, there is still a track and hedge on the line of the original road inside the fort. Slide 15 The video contains good images of a fort very similar to that built in Caersws. http://videos.howstuffworks.com/science-channel/29207-what-the-ancients-knew-the-roman-military-video.htm
