  1. Advanced studies in Design Katie Bailey Year 3- Interior design Retirement home Katie Bailey

  2. World population growth-baby boomers This graph is to show that in the future population will grow, and as now the ratio is there is more people under 40 than over 40 but as the years go on this ratio will change and by 2033 there will be more people over 40 then under. Katie Bailey

  3. Facts and predictions of the world population -By 2025 a third of the UK’s population will be over 55 -Number of people of pensionable age has over taken children under 16 -By 2025 the number of people over 60 years old will pass the under 25 old for the first time in the UK a man who turned 60 in 1981 could expect to live another 16years and a woman 21 years. By 2026 this will rise to almost 24 years for men and almost 27 for women-and even this is underestimated. -World wide by the mid 2030’s the number of people aged over 85 is projected to double to reach 3.2 million. -More than 10 million people today world wide will live to be 100 -In 4.1 years, the UK has the smallest gap between male and female life expectancy across the EU (27 countries). -4% of the older population are of ethnic groups. -Population of over 65 has increased from 15% in 1984 to 16% in 2009 that’s an increase of 1.7 million world wide. Katie Bailey

  4. How we treat our senior citizens Babies Parent Grandparent Generation y Baby boomers Generation x This is the ‘normal’ routine in life we are all once babies, then parents, then grand parents. As it goes, the older one of each generation looks after and take care the younger generation. But what happens when an older generation is no longer able to care of themselves let alone other people? Katie Bailey

  5. How different we treat older generation In many other cultures i.e. Muslims they treat their parents and grandparents with the up most respect and see it as an honour to have them live with them in their later years. They see that this older generation is wise and knowledgeable and knows a lot more then anything Google could ever teach you. So why is it that in the UK we don’t have this same sense of honour about taking care of our older loved ones. We are quite happy to do a lot of things for a new baby in the family but not the for the person that once gave us all of these things when we were a baby. • For a baby we will quite happily- • Buy new clothes for them • Take time off work to look after them • Buy new furniture • Move to a new house so there is enough room for them • Read books and make ourselves knowledgeable how to look after them • Just to name a few......... • So why don’t we do this for our older generation?? • After doing my research I soon found that the problem may not be that in some cases the younger generations don’t want to look after their elders it is that this generation still want to live independently but just need a little bit of help. Katie Bailey

  6. Retirement home thoughts........ When I thought along the lines of retirement homes many peoples reactions were that it wasn’t a pleasant place to design and could become boring. Instead I wanted it to be a challenge and try and change that opinion of retirement homes with my design. Thoughts were to aim it more to people of an age where they can happily live independently but find day to day task difficult and also just feel lonely and isolated and may want to be part of a community. • So how am I going to do this??? • Think why don’t people want to go into retirement homes and find solutions • How do I make it a home from home • Need to think how I would feel about moving from home • Try and think what it would be like to have a day in an older persons shoes • What can I do to make it a better quality of life for them • Original design that is not the same as all other retirement homes or villages Katie Bailey

  7. What activities to have on site Problems older people suffer from Suitable building To make rooms not the same, unique to person What do I have to research to make a suitable retirement home? How to keep people in contact with friends and family How to make a community To live independently without being isolated Technology aimed at older people Areas I am going to talk further about Katie Bailey

  8. Common problems found with people over 65 Area I’m going to talk about....... • Key things that I found when researching common problems for people over 65 • Falls in the home • Depression • Parkinson’s • Arthritis • Diabetes • Asthma • Upper respiratory tract infection (coughs, cold, flu) • Wheel chair or crutches • Sight and hearing problems • Memory loss • Now I have to take all of this into account and figure out ways that I can use this when designing. Katie Bailey

  9. Falls in the home • Few facts- • Women fall more then men • 2/3 of people that fall in the home will fall again in the next 6 months • Decrease in bone density contributes to falls and results in injury • Failure to exercise regularly results in poor muscle tone and decreased strength, loss of bone mass and flexibility. • At 1/3 of all falls in the elderly involve environmental hazards. • Need to think of solutions for this- • Clearways- lighting along floor so that people can see where they are going • Cameras- but knee length so gives them privacy but can see if they have fallen • Railings and bars- will need these in bathroom and around corridors • Floors- foam flooring so if there is a fall injuries will not be so severe • Furniture- needs to be certain height and depth so easier to get up and keep balance • Home accessories- no rugs, secure carpet, so unlikely to trip Katie Bailey

  10. Depression in older people • Depression in seniors is a major problem that I need to think a lot about in my design. • Few reasons elders may become depressed- • Suffering from an illness or just been diagnosed with one • Lose of a loved one- spouse, family members, friends or family pet • This then can follow to feeling isolated if no friends or family live near by • Feel they have no purpose in society without having a job • Just a few examples...... • Some solutions I have been thinking about for this problem • Chromo therapy-has been known in children's’ hospitals to help with illnesses and depression • How to make it more of a community- looked into community centres and how they can interact. Also how to have the circulation of their rooms/homes so they don’t feel isolated • How to keep family members in touch- look into technology, computers for elders so can use Skype and email to keep in touch. • A place for a retirement home pet • Areas for gardening Katie Bailey

  11. Arthritis in the elderly • Arthritis is when the swelling occurs in one or more joints in the body. This usually means that they have difficulty walking and bending. This is means mobility is slow and takes a longer time to do things. Designing for arthritis shouldn’t be too difficult because will have the similar requirements as wheel chair and crutches. • Things that I will have to consider- • Limited steps and more ramps and lifts • Furniture and storage parts will have to be at a certain height • Furniture design- needs to be suitable so easy to get in and out of • Facilities i.e. Taps, door knobs, light switches will have to be easy to turn • Obesity- have to think of diet because will be less mobile • Technology devices- keep track of breathing, vital signs etc Katie Bailey

  12. Building Jackson Wharf Katie Bailey

  13. About the Jackson Wharf and the area In 1765, the Bridgewater Canal was opened at Castlefield, creating a level link by water between the Duke of Bridgewater's coal mines at Worsley and the centre of Manchester. At Castlefield Junction the canal linked into a stretch of the River Medlock that had been incorporated into the canal and used as the basin for the canal wharves. Many of the great warehouses built around this basin are still standing and have been converted for modern use. Castlefield has undergone regeneration and is now an attractive and fashionable area. Jackson Wharf throughout the years has been renovated into many pubs but non of them were of any success. Ian Simpson had also drawn designs for Jackson Wharf to be apartments but planning permission was denied two years ago. Jackson Wharf is now not in use. Katie Bailey

  14. Location • Location is key for my design of a retirement home, things I need it to require- • Close to motorways and fairly close to airport • Activities to keep them entertained • Not a busy area but close enough to walk • Near train and tram stations • Close to a hospital (spire hospital 10-15min drive) • 10 min walk from town centre v v Jackson Wharf v v v Museums v v v v Public transport vc v v Cinema v Gardens/parks v v v Opera vc v Motorways and A roads Katie Bailey

  15. Some thoughts on Design concept.... Katie Bailey

  16. How to make it unique to the person Although my aim is to keep the area they live unique to them as in the problems they faces with illnesses, I also think that this can be interpreted into the furniture that I have in their home. So when researching about how to keep the brain active with images of families etc I thought how about if i could interlink the two with wall storage furniture and this is how it would go....... Katie Bailey

  17. Granny pods So after researching into retirement homes I came across something called a med cottages also known as granny pods. Granny pods are usually situated in a family members back garden. It is connected to the main houses gas, electric and water. Main reasons for people getting a granny pod is for the older members of the family is there is no room in their home for them but they can’t live alone any more and need to keep a watchful eye on. This had similarities to my thoughts for my retirement home and got me thinking about what overall concept I can have for my design. Katie Bailey

  18. Inside a med cottage-Granny pod Katie Bailey

  19. Living in pods • Some pro’s and con’s I found when thinking of designing living in pods for my design- • Pro’s • Wanted something like a bungalow so can help them be more mobile but may be too much maintenance for them • Didn’t want an apartment because couldn’t lay it out as a community so wouldn’t feel isolated • Can have a garden if needed or wanted • Can feel more independent • Cons • Can’t be adapted to needs of the people living there • How to make it unique to them • Not everyone will want to live on a ground floor • Easy access for burglars Katie Bailey

  20. Thoughts on how to solve some of the cons with pods How to adapt to peoples needs Dining room Bathroom Kitchen Main living space-living room and bedroom Guest accommodation Kitchen Bathroom Katie Bailey

  21. Other thoughts..... I have put together some other pods that I think I could interpret into my design and how it can help with some of the cons I have thought of. A living space on stilts so its safer for residence and is always a way of designing for disaster. Also a place that compliments its environment/surroundings and is eco friendly (recycling materials). Katie Bailey
