  5. Research issues in the area of ITS Requirements and implementation issues, e.g.: • Intelligent Speed Management • Special user groups (e.g. elderly drivers) • Legal and organisational requirements • Identification of safety potentials by accident analyses

Main activities in the eSafety initiative The eSafety initiative: • Joint private-public sector initiative launched by the European Commission in 2002 in order to increase road safety by means of modern information and communication technologies (50% reduction of fatalities by 2010) • Overall objective: European strategy to accelerate research, development and deployment Intelligent Integrated Road Safety Systems

Joint platform involving all road safety stakeholders Dealing with the problems of introducing intelligent vehicle safety systems including the business rationale eSafety Working Groups to focus on the domain-specific priority areas eSafety Forum promotes and monitors the recommendations identified by the Working Groups Main activities in the eSafety initiative The eSafety Forum

Main activities in the eSafety initiative eSafety Working Group HMI • Chair: Annie Pauzie, INRETS, F Alan Stevens, TRL, UK Christhard Gelau, BASt, D •  Objective:   • To identify HMI related problems likely to negatively impact on safety or markets for in-vehicle systems including “Nomad Systems” • To further develop existing EU Statement of Principles (ESoP) based on latest and future technological developments and applications

Main activities in the eSafety initiative eSafety Working Group HMI Progress: • Identification, listing and clustering of HMI related problems from available Member State reports and other relevant sources, “Problem Statements” for each cluster elaborated • Proposal of a “Solution Matrix” (ongoing)

Activities in the International Harmonised Research Activities on ITS (IHRA-ITS) Working Group IHRA-ITS • Representatives from Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Sweden, U.K., U.S. • BASt contributes to regular activities (conceptual framework, workshops, survey of current research, priority projects)

Activities in the International Harmonised Research Activities on ITS (IHRA-ITS) Working Group IHRA-ITS • Priority project: Development of a harmonised safety evaluation methodology framework • Joint German/Swedish/Japanese project on secondary task methods • Assessment of workload due to the use of in-vehicle information and communication systems • Results fit into the framework provided by projects like ADAM and CAMP (see 131st WP.29, Inf. Doc. No. 6)
