  2. Acts 2:1-16 And when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a noise

  15. What does the word Pentecost mean?

  16. Pentecost = “Fiftieth” But how does this New Testament event have anything to do with fifty or counting to fifty?

  17. It’s directly connected to an Old Testament Holy Day known as Shavuot.

  18. Leviticus 23:15-16 You shall also count for yourselves from the day after the Sabbath, from the day when you brought in the sheaf of the wave offering, there shall be

  19. Leviticus 23:15-16 seven complete Sabbaths. You shall count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath; then you shall present a new grain offering to the Lord.

  20. Shavuot – “Weeks” In the New Testament and Greek language, Shavuot is known as Pentecost, meaning “Fiftieth,” since it was celebrated on the 50th day after Firstfruits.

  21. Shavuot – “Weeks” Names were very important in the ancient world. They usually reflected the significance, history, or meaning of that to which they were attached.

  22. Shavuot – “Weeks” Shavuot marked the beginning of the summer wheat harvest.

  23. Shavuot – “Weeks” It involves a command-ment to count out seven weeks from the beginning of one harvest to another.

  24. Shavuot – “Weeks” We should never forget the importance of God’s harvest. (The physical or spiritual)

  25. Matthew 9:35-38 And Jesus was going about all the cities and the villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing

  29. Shavuot – “Weeks” As the people were counting each day, week, and Sabbath; they were to remember the giving of God’s Law and consider three main things.

  30. Shavuot / Pentecost The first has to do with counting our blessings. We are to specifically remember how YHVH has blessed us over and over again.

  31. Shavuot / Pentecost The second has to do with truly evaluating the things that hinder our ability to obey God in order to overcome them.

  32. Hebrews 12:1-3 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every (weight) encumbrance, and the sin which so easily entangles us

  36. Shavuot / Pentecost The third has to do with declaring that with the help of God’s Word and Spirit, we will overcome and/or conquer any sin that may currently stand in our way.

  37. Shavuot / Pentecost The children of God have gathered together to remember and celebrate the giving of God’s instructions for living. (The Law)

  38. Shavuot / Pentecost Let’s experience just a taste of what they would have encountered on that day. Turn with me to Exodus 19:16.

  39. What Came Next? Shortly after the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, many start to encounter something during the time of the counting. The Messiah is alive!

  40. What Came Next? And He gives them specific instructions which will directly coincide with the Feast of Shavuot / Pentecost! Let’s take a look at Luke 24.

  41. Luke 24:49-53 “And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” And He led

  42. Luke 24:49-53 them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. While He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven.

  43. Luke 24:49-53 And they, after worshipping Him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple praising God.

  44. The Promise! Jesus had already shared with them about the promise of the Holy Spirit. Let’s take a look at John 16.

  45. John 16:5-15 But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, “Where are You going?” But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your

  46. John 16:5-15 heart. But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him
