Bridging the Gap Workshop George Brett <ghb@internet2.edu>Russ Hobby <rdhobby@internet2.edu> Internet2 Fall Member Meeting September 20, 2005
Groups That Need to Talk • Researchers • Want to use the network for distributed applications • Applications Developers • Create the Applications for Researchers • Network Engineers • Operate the networks • Network Wizards • Try to understand the whole picture
Goals of the Workshop • Getting the Words of the Wizards out to others • Determine what needs to be communicated between groups • Find ways to facilitate communication on a continuous basis
Format of the Workshop • Level Setting - Views from the four areas • Problem Scenario – Breakout Groups • Wizards Solution • How to make it better – Breakout Groups • Group Reports - Findings
Some Findings • It was very hard to get people from all the groups to come to the workshop • Researchers will give up before getting full network capabilities • Applications Developers need to understand issues of cross-county latency • Network Engineers are never available
Some Action Ideas • Talk to NSF Program Directors about getting the issues from the workshop presented in their disciplines / program areas • Repeat the workshop on a regional or discipline or agency program basis • Network Engineer Office Hours • Virtual Office Hours with Network Engineers? • Online collaborative services (blog, wiki, etc.)
