  1. THE AFTERMATH OF THE REBELLIONS • Looking at the military results paints a misleading picture • Britain shocked by revolt in UC, considered to be populated by mainly loyalists and worried about annexation threat by US and about independence movement in BNA • Several rebels hanged while others shipped to Bermuda to be used as slave labourers. Of the 161 prisoners taken during the rebellion in LC, all but 8 were granted amnesty. • Britain appoints Lord Durham to head a commission to investigate causes and make recommendations

JOHN LAMBTON, EARL OF DURHAM • Aristocrat but a reformer with democratic tendencies, appointed Governor-in-Chief of the Canadas, May 29 1837. • During his time, he spent only 5 days in LC and referred to the Fr. Canadiens as “a people with no culture”. • “I expected to find a contest between a government and a people; I found two nations warring in the bosom of a single state: I found a struggle, not of principles, but of races…”

  3. Durham Report • Proposed a union of UC and LC • Equal # of representatives in new Elected Assembly • Why? • Pop of UC 456 000 vs LC 650 000 (with only 150 000 of these being English) THIS WAS ACCEPTED BY BRITISH GOVERNMENT

  4. The Durham Report • Proposed semi-autonomy • Canadasshould have power over internal affairs like taxation, but Br. still control foreign affairs and military THIS WAS ACCEPTED BY BRITISH GOVERNMENT

  5. Durham Report • Proposed an effort to absorb/assimilate the French • However, LaFontaine in LC and Baldwin in UC worked to mitigate such efforts • in fact, this proposal served to galvanize Canadien identity

  6. Durham Report • Proposed responsible government • Members of the EC and LC be appointed from elected members of LA • This as well, was not adopted by Br. Government

  7. THE ACT OF UNION 1840 • LC renamed Canada East, UC renamed Canada West and became United Canada and shared one LA, EC and LC. • English was to be the official language of the united colony
