How to select a secure payment gateway

When you pay at an offline store you pay via cash or a credit or debit card, there is a machine which authenticates with your bank. For Online payment, you cannot have that e-machine at your home and hence the merchant needs to subscribe to a Payment Gateway which will authenticate the card with the bank's server for its authenticity.
