  16. Professional Exemptions They can be useful but… • They are difficult – lots of content • Not that important to employers • Not all the Big 4 firms recognise them • If you do want to qualify, you will probably have to attend classes and take a test anyway • May not be relevant for international students • Don’t make the rest of your professional exams any easier Look at them critically, they should not be your default choices

  17. Your Final Year Research Project Why do we have a final year research project? • Because we have to • Because Leeds is a Russell Group research led institution • Because research capability and evidence of independent learning is a valuable skill for your future employers • Because completing a UG research project makes post graduate research much easier • Because students enjoy it (after its finished)

  18. UG Research Project:Student Feedback • Very stimulating, possibly the best thing I’ve done. There should be more projects like this. • It allowed me to use the knowledge I have gained during my degree to produce a high quality piece of work. • Helped bring what I learnt in previous years, I had to apply to this module. • It was a good module relevant to the Accounting and Finance degree.

  19. So what do you have to do? You need to choose one of the following: So what is each module like?

  20. LUBS3865 Financial Analysis • Module leader: Dr Helen Short • Semester: 1 and 2 • Credits: 20 • Contact time: • 5 2 hour lectures • 10 1 hour lectures • 10 1 hour tutorials • Limited individual support • Pre-requisites: • LUBS2290 Intermediate Financial Accounting

Focus of the module • On completion of this module, students will have demonstrated the independent research skills necessary to define conduct and report a substantial piece of empirical research in accounting and finance. • Topics covered: • Defining the research project, conducting a literature review, project planning • Identifying a conceptual framework, developing a hypothesis/research question • Data collection, review, and analysis • Conclusions and making recommendations for future research • Writing up the research project

  25. Assessment • An 8,000 word (maximum) research dissertation. • Students will be provided with a list of suggested research topics and will choose a subject for their dissertation with guidance from the Module Manager and their Dissertation Supervisor. • The Dissertation Supervisor will subsequently work with the student and suggest further readings as necessary to complete the research project. • TBC. UG Dissertations are usually submitted in early May after the Easter vacation in the 2nd semester.

  27. Key Points • Next year is an important year for you (I know I always say that) • You will need to make some tough option choices • The Research Project is likely to be one of your biggest challenges • In the next few weeks you need to think carefully about what you want from your degree and what your skills and preferences are • You can find out more about individual modules in the A&F Options Fair which will take place after Easter on 30th April 2-4pm.
