  1. Decimals…What’s the Point? August 20th

  2. Warm up • Explain 4 steps when you divide a decimal by a decimal….remember to include where the decimal will be in your answer or quotient. Show an example.

  3. Multi-digit decimals What am I Learning Today? How will I show that I learned it? By fluently dividing multi-digit decimals correctly.

  4. Remember these division terms! Quotient 0.15 0.75 5 Divisor Dividend

  5. How do I divide decimal numbers by whole numbers? 1) Bring the decimal point up on top of the division bar. 2) Divide like whole numbers. Questions Answers 1) Make the divisor a whole number by moving the decimal point to the far right of the number. 2) Move the decimal in your dividend the same number of places to the right as the divisor. 3) Bring your decimal point up and divide like whole numbers. How do I divide decimal numbers by decimal numbers? If the decimal quotient doesn’t terminate, how do I know when to stop? Divide out to the thousandths place and round back to the hundredths place. How do I know if a decimal quotient is repeating? If you complete the same subtraction problem two times while dividing.

  6. Place a decimal point in the quotient directly above the decimal point in the dividend. Divide as you would with whole numbers. Dividing a Decimal by a Whole Number Find the quotient. 3.56 ÷ 4 0. 8 9 4 3.56 – 32 36 – 36 0

  7. Helpful Hint Multiplying the divisor and the dividend by the same number does not change the quotient. 42 ÷ 6 = 7 10  10 420 ÷ 60 = 7  10  10 4,200 ÷ 600 = 7

  8. Multiply the divisor and dividend by the same power of ten. There is one decimal place in the divisor. Multiply by 101, or 10. Think: 1.3 x 10 = 13 5.2 x 10 = 52 Divide. Dividing a Decimal by a Decimal Find the quotient. 5.2 ÷ 1.3 1.3 5.2 4 13 52 –52 0 5.2 ÷ 1.3 = 4

  9. 36 6,130.000 Think: 0.36 x 100 = 36 61.3 x 100 = 6,130 Make the divisor a whole number by multiplying the divisor and dividend by 102, or 100. Dividing a Decimal by a Decimal 61.3 ÷ 0.36 0.36 61.30

  10. __ When a repeating pattern occurs, draw a bar over the repeating part of the quotient. Place the decimal point in the quotient. Divide. 61.3 ÷ 0.36 = 170.27 Example Continued 0 .2 1 7 7 7 36 6,130.000 -36 253 -252 10 -0 100 -72 280 -252 280 -252 28

  11. Now Try These! Find each quotient. 1. 49 ÷ 0.7 2. 21.63 ÷ 2.1 3. 38.43 ÷ 6.1 4. 16.9 ÷ 5.2 5. John spent $13.44 renting 4 videos for the weekend. What was the cost per video? 70 10.3 6.3 3.25 $3.36
