  3. A Common Sense Approach to Officiating(Things We Take For Granted)

  4. STARTING AT HOME • Did I REALLLLY pack my bag?

  5. Honouring That Pre-Game Meeting Going to the game: • Do I have good directions? • Do I have enough travel time? (Go to the bank, fill the tank, stop at Tim Horton’s.) • Did I count on extra traffic. After all, I’ve done this trip before! • Did I anticipate

  6. Honouring the Pre-Game Nobody is here. I might as well get a hot dog, or take a walk around. Make sure you find the room and get the key. Arrival at the Park/Stadium

  7. The Pre-Game Meeting • I know I’m a little late, but I have to introduce myself, after all I don’t want to be rude. • I can go to the washroom and listen at the same time. That “dump is all that I needed! • I can clean my shoes, listen and talk at the same time. • I’ll have a little snooze, my partner will talk to me later. We’ve Gone Over this A Hundred Times

  8. Leagues Have Expectations Look The Part Do You?

  9. At the Field • Pre-Game With Coaches Show up on time, even if they don’t. Don’t become antagonistic or argumentative LISTEN • Field Inspections • No need to hurry, we’ve played on this field a dozen times this season!

  10. Equipment and Support Personnel • Equipment and personnel aren’t always ready - find the sticks and chain crew • Timers - FIND the timer, does he know the timing, does he know how to use the clock or scoreboard?

  11. Starting The Game Reality Games don’t always start on time. Take time and assess the reasons. • tardiness vs. broken bus! • showmanship vs. dressing room problems!

  12. Difficult Situations • Don’t argue or yell at players or coaches • Talk amongst yourselves but don’t pout

  13. Be Approachable Many officials whose technical competence is high could improve their overall performance by increasing their communication skills with coaches and players. The explanation of the foul and penalty application at certain times builds rapport and respect.

  14. Making the Good Call • See the foul • Find the ball • Throw the flag AVOID AND AVOID MARGINAL CALLS

  15. Knowing the Difference vs. Objectionable and Un-sportsman like U.R.

  16. Rule Knowledge • Knowing the rule yesterday is not good enough. • Rule study before and during the season is essential. • Don’t assume that a certain situation will never come up (be realistic) • Don’t worry about the obscure, know the fundamentals

  17. Preventative Officiating Uniform Violations • Know the league expectations. • Look for during your field inspection. • Don’t wait until someone complains. • Deal with issues efficiently and be non- confrontational.

  18. Feedback/Constructive Criticism • “Constuct”ive…build upon. • Be an active not a defensive listener. • Be assertive but not aggressive. • Supervisors have a different vantage point. • Major differences should be discussed at another time. Don’t argue in front of others. • Nothing was said! I must have had a great game. WRONG- Self Evaluate.
