Relevance: By reading modern fiction, we examine aspects of ourselves and others and how social and historical events impact the way in which we communicate.   9. The RoadMonday • Why do they look east? Of what is light symbolic? How does he describe the land? • What are significant details about the gas station? What details reveal how long these two have been traveling and/or how long ago this “incident” occurred? • What is significant about the shopping cart? What is in it? • What is the purpose of the mask? • What does the country seem like now? • Why does the father read to the boy? • When he awoke during the night, he always touched his son. Why? • For the man, the boy was his “warrant” his “word of God.” What does this mean? • They ravel the road, but always watch the road ahead and behind for danger. What is the “the road”?

Relevance: By reading modern fiction, we examine aspects of ourselves and others and how social and historical events impact the way in which we communicate.   12. The Road Tuesday Ms. Durland out at District Meeting Sub Plans: • Attendance Hand out all 4 (front and back) pages of the Study Guide. Pass the stapler around (on table by file cabinet (for them to staple it together). • Tell them to be prepared for the potential of a graded discussion, collection of study guide and/or writing assignment based on the discussion. • Allow them time to read through page 48 ofThe Roadand complete written responses to the Study Guide Sections 1-4.

Instruction: Obtain I Do Thursday Written/Visual Journey Log Purpose: to identify plot elements of the novel (setting/time) Tasks: • Read through your assigned section • Note any time references, setting descriptions, rising actions (events), conflicts, and characterization • Create a visual image of the section • Select a quote from the text (one or two sentences) that best represents your section Outcome: understanding of rising action of the novel
