The Purposes of Literature • Edification: the instruction or improvement of a person morally or intellectually • Education: the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, esp. at a school or university • Entertainment: the action of providing or being provided with amusement or enjoyment

  3. The Purposes of Literature • A work of literature can have more than one purpose. It can be simultaneously educational and entertaining, or edifying and educating, etc. • What is the purpose of literature fulfilled by The Story of My Life? • What is the purpose fulfilled by The Glass Menagerie?

  4. In-Class Assignment make a supported statement answering the question “What purpose of literature did the novel, Christy, fulfill?”.

Christy • Fiction, based on a true story • This lends the author artistic license, meaning that not everything must be written exactly the way that it happened. • Because it is a story based on the experiences of her mother, the author’s choosing to fictionalize the story enables her to fill in details and enhance characters without the fear of straying from the truth.

  8. Themes of Christy • Finding one’s Purpose • Christy has a great desire to help others. This stems from her desire to have a real purpose in life. • This purpose is a continuous journey, rather than a simple plot. • Finding a purpose in life requires determination to continue pursuing one’s purpose, despite obstacles and conflict. • This theme in the novel represents a universal idea that all people are in search of a purpose in life, a meaning for existence. This is shown in the character of Miss Alice’s daughter, who struggles with her identity and struggles to create a meaning for her life.
