MAGNETISM. Introduction. A magnetic field is a region in space where magnetic forces can be detected. It can be shown using magnetic field lines . The direction of the field (shown by an arrow) is the direction a small north pole would move if placed in the field.

Introduction • A magnetic field is a region in space where magnetic forces can be detected. • It can be shown using magnetic field lines. • The direction of the field (shown by an arrow) is the direction a small north pole would move if placed in the field. • Strengthof the magnetic field is shown by the density of the fieldlines.

  3. Like poles repel, opposite poles attract • The north pole (arrowhead) of a compass needle points towards the magnetic south pole of the Earth. This is located near the Earth’s geographic north pole.

Magnetic field around a current-currying wire • The Right Hand Grip rule is usedto determine the direction of the magnetic field around a current carrying wire. • Grasp the wire with right hand so that thumb points in the direction of the current. • Your fingers curl in the direction of the magnetic field.

  6. The magnetic field around a solenoid • The Right Hand Solenoid rule is used to find the direction of the magnetic field around a solenoid (coil of wire). • Grasp the solenoid with your right hand so your fingers curl in the direction of the current. Your thumb will point towards the magnetic north pole.

  7. Electromagnets • Consists of a coil of wire wound around a soft iron core. The strength of the electromagnet can be increased by: • Increasing the number of turns of wire per metre • Increasing the thickness of the soft iron core • Increasing the current in the coil
