  2. Why does social change happen? Some societies change more than others For example: Some monarchies enjoy much reverence from the population while other monarchies have lost support Canada and social change… What social changes have happened in Canada during the last 20 years 10 years 2 years

  3. What needs to happen for change to occur? • Leadership A leader needs to have charisma for change to occur What is charisma? Charisma – describes a leader who has a large vision, magnetic style, strong popular support and aspects of extraordinary, superhuman, and supernatural character

  5. Elites • People can also have an influence on change • Elites create social change and influence its direction • Social change usually happens when elites as well as leaders get together to create change

People want Change • There can be a vary charismatic leader and change won’t happen because people don’t want change • The public has to be in the mood for change • The environment influences a persons need for change – Example: liberal surrounding = liberal attitudes • Do the values we have early in life stay with us for the rest of our live?

  7. Impediments to Change • Traditional Cultural Values Although a society may want to modernize there would be individuals in society who would want to keep it the same because the traditional way is better for them Example: Malaysian rice farmers

  8. Expense • Change can be expensive • If the government wants to establish more social programs it is the citizenry who will pay for the changes • People may not be willing to pay for the programs because they do not want them What social programs should Canadians support?
