  1. Paleo Diet Also known as the caveman diet or hunter-gatherer diet. The paleo diet is all about eating the way people ate in the Paleolithic era where people were mainly hunters and gatherers. Claim: “This Paleo way of eating and being takes us back to our roots, and it makes people feel better: they lose weight, gain muscle, have more energy, have less inflammation of all kinds, their skin looks better and they feel younger.”

  2. DRI Breakdown The calories per person per day ranged from 1,489 to 1,974 and the averages per day for all values were: Calories – 1,639
Carbs – 97 g
Fat – 98 g
Protein – 108 g Percentage of total calories broke down like this: Carbs – 24% (DRI = 45-65% calories) Fat– 50% (DRI = 20-35% calories) Protein – 26% (DRI = 10-35% calories)

  3. Risks/Benefits • The major risk of this diet is the fact that you are making fat your main source of energy instead of carbs. During the detox phase where your body adjusts to this change, people report feeling very sluggish and having extremely low energy levels, and then feeling great after the adjustment or detox period. • The benefits stated to be provided by this diet are: loss of fat, increased muscle mass, increased energy, less inflammation of any kind and better looking skin. • I would not recommend this diet to anyone because anyone educated on nutrition knows the importance of adequacy, balance and especially the need of dairy and grains in our diet, which is completely lacking in the paleo diet.
