The Father of Vaccinations • 1796- Edward Jenner • British doctor • Small children who milked the cows never contracted • SMALLPOX • He injected some small students with cowpox and they were immune to SMALLPOX • He later called a Vaccination • VACCINE- given to boost your body’s immune system • Contains a small amount of dead or inactive virus

  3. Immunization Program • Immunization- you become immune to the infection through vaccines • Most children get a vaccine for the following • Polio • Tetanus • Whooping cough • Rubella • Measles • Meningitis

  4. Measles- Mumps- Rubella • Infectious diseases that have serious complications • Mental issues • Sterile • Deafness The vaccine lowers the risks and complications Controversy- some claim that it can cause autism

HIV – Human Immunodeficiency Virus • Attacks a person’s immune system • The immune system becomes weak and susceptible to all types of infections • Most advanced stage- AIDS • Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome • Usually the change from HIV to AIDs • 10- 15 years • 2007- 33 million people with HIV • 7000 People per day are diagnosed

  6. HPV- Human Papillomavirus • 2008- HaraldzurHausen • Connection between HPV and cervical cancer • Virus- found in males and females • Vaccine is only approved for females as of now

  7. Smoke Free Environment • Smoking kills 13000 people a year in Ontario • Carcinogens- affect the cells- tissues and organs • Contains more than 1000 chemicals • 1/5 are toxins

  8. Smoking • It can affect: • Blood pressure • Heart Rate • Low Birth Rates • Diabetes 2006- prohibited from all work places 2009- ban against smoking cars with children under the age of 16

  9. UV Rays • Ultraviolet radiation • Sun exposure • Causes skin cancer • 62000 people develop skin cancer a year in Canada

  10. West Nile Virus • It spreads the virus through blood • Spread by mosquitoes to • Humans • Horses
