A Day in the Life of a 5th Grader • Supervision begins at 7:40 am • 8:00-8:15 Morning Prayer • 8:15-8:30 Unpack/Morning Work • 8:30-10:30 Reading/Language Arts • 10:30-11:30 Math • 11:40-12:25 Science/Special • 12:30-1:25 Lunch/Recess • 1:30-2:00 Social Studies • 2:00-2:10 Packing up • 2:10-2:55 Science/Special • 3:00 Dismissal to carpool/tutorial

  3. General Infomation • Please send in a healthy, easy to eat snack • Please label all items • 6 Day rotation schedule • Agenda

  4. Fifth Grade Goals • This year we will work to develop the following: • Critical thinking skills/problem solving skills • Ability to work in groups • Goal setting • Independence, accountability/responsibility

  5. Language Arts • Writer’s Workshop • Reader’s Workshop • Grammar • Vocabulary

  6. Writer’s/Reader’s Workshop • What does Writer’s/Reader’s Workshop look like? • Mini lesson • Independent writing/readingtime • Conferences • Partner time

  7. Writer’s Workshop Units of Study • Narrative Craft • The Lens of History: Research Reports • The Research-Based Argument Essay • Literary and Comparative Essay • Memoir "Writing is an exploration. You start from nothing and learn as you go."

  8. Reading at Home • Your child is required to read a total of 120 minutes per week. There is a 10 minute increase each quarter. • Reading logs are due every Monday morning. • You do not have to sign them! • The book your child reads in class should be the same book they read at home.

  9. Math • Every Day Counts- Calendar Math • Primary Mathematics • Model Drawing

  10. Social Studies Focus will be on study skills and tackling textbook reading! • United States History • Monthly tasks

  11. Homework Expectations • There will be homework EVERY NIGHT • Amount of homework will increase as the year goes on • Neatness is important! • Expect reading, writing, and math

  12. Demerits • 2 types of demerits • Assignment • Behavior Demerit sheets are located on the inside cover of the agenda. 8 assignment/behavior demerits allowed before mandatory tutorial or detention occurs ***The number decreases to 6 for 3rd and 4th quarter!

  13. Reminders for First Day of School • Summer reading is due on the first day. No exceptions. • Students will report to homeroom, not to morning prayer. • Please be patient with carpool!

  14. Please remember that we are a team!!!
