Mentoring Programs Offered • Offered to Students who are interested in exploring the field of Student Affairs and/or higher education as a career path. • IDC offers 2 programs • NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program (NUFP) http://www.naspa.org/programs/nufp/ • Student Affairs Mentoring Program & Leadership Experience (SAMPLE) http://www.ub-diversity.buffalo.edu/samentor.php

NUFP vs. SAMPLE NUFP • Coordinated through NASPA • Specific Student Populations • LGBTQ • Students of Color • Students w/disabilities • Requirements outside of UB • National Opportunities • Networking • Sessions at Annual Conference SAMPLE • Coordinated through IDC (Student Affairs) • Open to all under-graduate students • Flexibility • No requirements outside of UB • Students learn about various national organizations

  4. Advantages - NUFP • Participants… • Are exposed to various aspects of NASPA • Can apply for leadership positions nationally (i.e. internships, summer retreats, etc.) • Connect with students at various institutions throughout the U.S.

  5. Advantages - SAMPLE • Participants… • Have less structure/more flexibility • Are exposed to various national organizations • Expectations are less intense

The Role of the IDC • Coordinate the selection of students • Facilitate mentor-mentee pairing process • Provide support to Mentors (i.e. suggest agenda topics for weekly meetings, check-in for questions, etc.) • Provide support to Mentees (i.e. organize professional development opportunities, host cohort meetings, etc.) • Keep cohort abreast of up-coming events and important news.

  7. Choosing a Program • Students submit an application • Provides insight about the student’s interest • IDC staff member interviews applicants • Based on interview, determines which program is best fit • SAMPLE – recommended for students who are “not sure” or who do not fit the NUFP criteria • NUFP – recommended for students who understand Student Affairs/Higher Education and fit criteria
