EARTH Teacher Workshop 2008: Microbial Oceanography It’s Not Easy Being Green: Marine Phytoplankton
Activity Summary • Summary • In this activity students will model phytoplankton growth in the lab as an introduction to using data from remote sensing systems. • Key Concepts • Phytoplankton are photosynthetic organisms responsible for about half of all primary production. • Phytoplankton growth is dependent upon a variety of environmental parameters. • Scientists use data from satellite imagery and instrumentation to monitor phytoplankton growth.
Procedure • Teacher pre-grows the phytoplankton • Lab set up and phytoplankton samples distributed to student groups • Student groups assigned a variable to investigate with phytoplankton growth • Students present results to class • Students evaluate satellite images from Oceancolor (NASA) and answer worksheet questions
