  2. What is narrative? • Any form of storytelling: SHORT STORIES MYTHS NOVELLAS NOVELS BIOGRAPHIES FILMS NEWS REPORTS

What is plot? • A skillfully spun story with a beginning, middle, and end • Components of the plot include: INTRODUCTION: the beginning of the story that establishes the characters, setting, and mood INITIAL CONFLICT: the first incident that sets the story in motion RISING ACTION: the middle section of the story that keeps the reader’s attention CLIMAX: the part of the story that occurs when the rising action reaches its highest point of interest CONCLUSION: the end of the story that attempts to tie up loose ends and answer any questions

What makes a good introduction? • Establish your characters • PROTAGONIST OR MAIN CHARACTER • ANTAGONIST OR THE ONE WHO POSES CHALLENGES • OTHERS…BUT USUALLY NOT MORE THAN 6 • Create your setting • THE WHERE AND WHEN • Select a narrative voice or point of view • FIRST PERSON (a character tells the story using I, my, we) • SECOND PERSON (a narrator makes you the main character, using you, your) • THIRD PERSON (a narrator tells the story using he, she, they) • THIRD PERSON OMNISCIENT (the narrator is ‘all knowing and can describe the feelings of the other characters)

What is immediacy? • Have you ever felt as though you were actually living the part of the characters as you read a story? • You have achieved a sense of immediacy if you are so immersed in the story that you forget your actual surroundings. • Your pulse may quicken, you may cry, laugh, or feel anger or terror!

  6. How can the author create suspense? • Suspense: the curiosity or tension the reader feels about the outcome of the story • Foreshadowing: the author gives the reader clues about the outcome of the story • Flashback: a break in the story in the form of a dream or memory that reveals information about events that took place before the story began

  7. What is the difference between mood and atmosphere? • These terms can be used interchangeably. • Mood and atmosphere means the prevailing feeling of the story • Mood is more associated with the feeling that is evoked by characters • Atmosphere is more associated with the feeling that is evoked by the setting • OMINOUS BLEAK TENSE EERIE SOMBRE DEPRESSING EXHALTING HILARIOUS HEARTWARMING THRILLING VIBRANT EXUBERANT • CONFINING GROTESQUE GOTHIC

  8. What types of conflict exist? • Conflict is the clashing of opposing opinions, interests, desires or powers • PERSON VS PERSON • PERSON VERSUS SELF • PERSON VERSUS NATURE • PERSON VERSUS SOCIETY • PERSON VERSUS TECHNOLOGY • PERSON VERSUS THE SUPERNATURAL

  9. What is theme? • The theme is the life lesson that you learned after you read the story, such as: THE CHANGE FROM INNOCENCE TO EXPERIENCE THE POWER OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY THE IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY IN OUR LIVES THE INHUMANITY OF OPPRESSION

Tools of the Trade: Literary Devices • SIMILE: a comparison using the words “like” or “as” FOR EXAMPLE: “My love is like a red, red rose” • METAPHOR: a comparison that does not use the words “like” or “as” FOR EXAMPLE: “My love is a red, red rose” • PERSONIFY: an inanimate object is given human qualities FOR EXAMPLE: “The wind whispered through the branches of the trees” • SYMBOL: an act, person, or thing that stands for something else FOR EXAMPLE: Water is a symbol of purity

  11. More tools… • PATHETIC FALLACY: the author uses the natural elements to convey the atmosphere or mood of the story FOR EXAMPLE: a death occurs in the dead of winter or a birth occurs in the spring

Criteria for Assignments • Write Traits Checklist (print off) Name____________________ • Ideas and Organization: I have included creative or informative ideas and I have organized them into a piece of writing that is modeled after examples of written work • Word Choice: I have selected appropriate words to suit the type of writing (ie. persuasive words for expressing an opinion) • Voice: I am using an appropriate voice for specific types of writing (ie. personal voice for journal response, convincing voice for expressing an opinion) • Sentence Fluency and Conventions: I have written in proper sentence form (using both long and short sentences to add variety), and I have used all of my grammar rules properly (ie. punctuation, capitalization, subject-verb agreements, etc) • Presentation: I have revised and edited my rough copies so that my final copies of work are error free and look great; my work would make my family and friends proud of me
