  2. Nature and Nurture • Nature is what you’ve inherited genetically • You cannot control this • Nurture is you lifestyle, social situation and life experience: you can control these things to a certain extent

  3. How does nature and nurture fit in with my exam? • The ‘nature-nurture’ debate looks at the interactions between genetic and environmental factors in determining our health and well-being. You should understand the extent to which people can influence the factors that affect their health and well-being and the implications that this has both for individuals and for health and social care workers.

  4. The nature – nurture debate • The nature/nurture debate is about whether certain physical, personality of lifestyle traits are due to a person’s genes (nature) or to their upbringing (nurture) Task: List what aspects of you are as a result of nature and what are as a result of nurture.

  5. The nature – nurture Theory • Bateson argues that human development is like baking a cake. What do you think Bateson meant by this? • Venter argued that the idea that a person is controlled by their genes is a complete fallacy. Do you agree with this? Make sure you can justify your answers.

  9. Exam Questions: Nature and Nurture Sarah’s mother died from heart disease in her early fifties. Investigations showed that there was a family history on her mother’s side of high blood cholesterol. Sarah already has high blood cholesterol. Sarah’s father, Bill (66 years old), has been a lifetime cigarette smoker and this has resulted in heart disease and respiratory problems. He has lived in a small house about 10 miles away since Sarah was born. This is a deprived area close to an industrial estate. Unemployment is high with crime and vandalism common. Using the information given and your own knowledge, discuss how Sarah’s awareness of nature and nurture may affect her lifestyle. (10 Marks) Taken from January 2008
