  3. What is 5th Grade All About? • Responsibility • Accountability • Setting the example • Added Privileges • Know the kind of learner you are and find strategies that work  • Continue to learn time management • Develop study and test taking skills • Prepare for Middle School • Technology – 1:1

Homework Policy • District guidelines: Roughly 45-50 minutes per night, including reading. • Homework assigned throughout the week – classroom website • Posted on Classroom Website: http://mrsfoleysclassroomsite.weebly.com/ • Develop time management skills • No homework on Fridays or holidays UNLESS there is unfinished work or late homework from the week or a long term project. • Homework is for review, to develop organizational skills and foster responsibility! It’s not meant to cause stress! • Send in a note if homework is taking too long or if your child is regularly unable to do it independently.

Reading Workshop ELA Blocks – 90 minutes 5x/week Readers Workshop -Independent Reading – continue to increase stamina -Focus Lessons: Comprehension Strategies, (asking questions, determining importance, summarizing, inferring) -Reader’s Notebooks -Interactive Read Aloud -Focus on exposing students to different genres -Small Book Groups/RTI -Word Study –Word study is a method of explicit instruction in letter- sound relationships and patterns within words. teaches spelling patterns teaches word meanings/parts of words hands-on it’s for everyone – differentiated

Writing Workshop – Google Classroom SRSD – Self Regulated Strategy Development -In Depth Extensive Writing -Opinion vs. Informational -Narrative -Writing to Text -Synthesizing Multiple Texts TREEL (Opinion) TIDE (Informative) -Topic Introduction -Topic Introduction -Reasons -Ideas -Explanation -Detailed evidence -Links & language WWWW2H2 (Narrative) -Who, What, Where, When -What happens – what does the main character want to happen -How does the story end – how are the feelings of the main character changed and/or resolved.

Other? • 5th Grade Play – Thursday, June 4th, 2020 at 10am & 7pm • Art Show – May 1, 2020 • Lunch – sit anywhere • Birthday Celebrations… • MA state food guidelines limit food allowed to be given out to students in school. Please think of other creative ways to celebrate your child’s birthday – I’ve seen some great ways – happy to help if I can!
