  1. MAY 2015LINE OF SIGHT

  2. Line of sight: An imaginary line that exists between two objects.

  3. VHF and UHF radio transmissions usually require a clear path between antennas known as the line of sight.

  4. FORMULA: Line of sight in miles = SQRT (2 * total height of Antenna 1) + SQRT (2 * total height of Antenna 2)

  5. Total height of the antenna = Ground elevation at the base of the antenna + Height of the antenna above the ground

  6. EXAMPLE Base of antenna 1 = 1250 feet Height of antenna 1 above ground = 40 feet Total height of antenna 1 = 1290 feet Base of antenna 2 = 2857 feet Height of antenna 2 above ground = 40 feet Total height of antenna 2 = 2897 feet

  7. Total height of antenna 1 = 1290 feet 1290 times 2 = 2580 Total height of antenna 2 = 2897 feet 2897 times 2 = 5794 Square Root of 2580 = 51 Square Root of 5794 = 76

  8. The line of sight between the two antennas is 51 + 76 = 127 miles
