  1. The Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR) Diana L. Burley, Ph.D. Program Director Division of Undergraduate Education National Science Foundation February 1, 2007

  2. NSF Strategic PlanInvesting in America’s FutureFY 2006 - 2011 • NSF employs four core strategies that cut across all NSF programs and activities (Ideas, Tools, People, Organizational Excellence). • People – Developing a diverse, competitive, and globally-engaged U.S. workforce of scientists, engineers, and technologists, and a well-prepared citizenry

  3. EHR Mission To promote the development of a diverse and well-prepared workforce of scientists, technicians, engineers, mathematicians and educators and a well-informed citizenry who have access to the ideas and tools of science and engineering.

  4. EHR Goals • Prepare the next generation of STEM professionals and attract and retain more Americans to STEM careers. • Develop a robust research community that will support excellence in STEM education and that integrates research and education. • Increase the technological, scientific and quantitative literacy of all Americans. • Broaden participation and close achievement gaps in all STEM fields.

  5. EHR on the Web(www.nsf.gov)

  6. EHR “New” Division Structure • Graduate Education (DGE) • Undergraduate Education (DUE) • Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings (DRL) • Elementary, Secondary and Informal Education (ESIE) • Research, Evaluation and Communication (REC) • Human Resource Development (HRD) • Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR)

  7. Division of Graduate Education (DGE) Mission: To promote the early career development of scientists and engineers by providing support at critical junctures of their careers through fellowships and traineeships.

  8. DGE Programs • Graduate Research Fellowships • NSF Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education (GK-12) • Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT)

  9. Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE) • Mission:  To promote excellence in undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education for all students. • Goals: • Provide leadership • Support curriculum development • Prepare the workforce • Foster connections

  10. DUE Programs • Instructional Development • Course, Curriculum and Laboratory Improvement (CCLI) • National STEM Education Digital Library (NSDL)

  11. DUE Programs • Workforce Development • STEM Talent Expansion Program (STEP) • Advanced Technological Education (ATE) • Federal Cyber Service: Scholarships for Service (SFS) • Robert Noyce Scholarship Program (Noyce) • NSF Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM)

  12. “New” DUE Programs • Math and Science Partnership (MSP) • Excellence Awards in Science & Engineering (EASE) • Distinguished Teaching Scholars (DTS) Program • Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) Program • Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM)

  13. Division of Elementary, Secondary and Informal Education (ESIE) Mission: To improve the educational experiences of all students in school settings, pre-K through the 12th grade, and to increase and improve the opportunities for all individuals to explore STEM beyond the school setting.

  14. ESIE Programs • Advanced Technological Education (ATE) • Communicating Research to Public Audiences • Informal Science Education (ISE) • NSF Academies for Young Scientists (AYS) • Discovery Research K-12 (DRK12) • Information Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST)

  15. Division of Research, Evaluation, and Communication (REC) Mission: REC contributes to the broad field of educational research and improvement by funding projects through grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements. It also provides conceptual and technical assistance to various EHR programs and principal investigators.

  16. REC Programs • Advanced Learning Technologies • Research and Evaluation on Education in Science and Engineering (REESE) (ROLE, EREC, IERI)

  17. Division of Human Resource Development (HRD) Mission (two-fold): • To increase the participation and advancement of underrepresented minorities and minority-serving institutions at every level of the STEM enterprise. • To serve as a focal point for NSF's commitment to enhancing the quality and excellence of STEM education and research by broadening participation.

  18. HRD Programs • Minorities and Minority Serving Institutions • Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate Program (AGEP) • The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Program (LSAMP) and Bridge to the Doctorate (BD) Program • Centers for Research Excellence in Science and Technology (CREST) • Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Programs (HBCU-UP) • Tribal Colleges and Universities Program (TCUP)

  19. HRD Programs • Women and Girls • Research on Gender in Science and Engineering (GSE) • Persons with Disabilities • Research in Disabilities Education (RDE)

  20. Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) EPSCoR promotes the development of the states' science and technology (S&T) resources through partnerships involving a state's universities, industry, and government, and the Federal research and development (R&D) enterprise.

  21. EPSCoR Programs • EPSCoR Workshop Opportunities (EPS) • Grant Opportunities for Academic Liaison with Industry (GOALI)

  22. Capacity-Building Strategies • Identify effective ways to: • Prepare and support faculty who can inspire and challenge students in the STEM disciplines • Provide faculty with effective materials and strategies to promote and assess learning • Address (formally and informally) STEM knowledge requirements of adults

  23. Capacity-Building Strategies • Invest in research on learning • Facilitate the translation of research into practice • Create supportive learning environments and pathways by developing models of reform/systemic change at both institutional and multi-institutional levels through networking, partnerships, alliances and collaborations
