  1. Physics of Sound Investigation 2: Good Vibrations Part 2 Length and Pitch

  2. objectives • I can describe what happens to the pitch and vibration when the length of a sound source changes.

  3. Introduce the explorations • We have four new sound instruments to explore. • The Waterphone • Strike the bottle with the mallet below the water level to produce the best sound. • The Xylophone • Explain that a xylophone is a musical instrument made from a set of bars or tubes that make sounds with different pitches.

  4. Introduce the explorations • The Kalimba • The kalimba is an African thumb piano. • The String Beam • Watch carefully how to use the string beam. It is not very loud, so you have to listen carefully. You will get to explore the instruments, and then we will do a structured activity with them.

  5. Rules for exploration • Make sure everyone gets a turn to try each instrument. • Strike the bottles or xylophone tubes gently. • Treat the instruments with care. • The string beam is handmade and must be treated gently.

  6. Exploration stations • In your yellow science book, you have one worksheet to fill out for each instrument. • Read the instructions CAREFULLY. • RECORD your group’s observations. • DESCRIBE what you observed. • If you finish an activity early, do the GO FURTHER at the bottom of the page.

  7. Think-pair-share • What did you observe during the activities? • Think-Pair-Share: • What happens to the pitch and vibrations when the length of the sound source changes? • What are some musical instruments that make different pitches by changing the length of the sound source?

  8. objectives • I can describe what happens to the pitch and vibration when the length of a sound source changes.
