How Diseases Spread • Epidemiology is the study of how infectious diseases spread. • Diseases are transmitted (spread) in several ways: • Direct transmission—an infectious disease that is passed from one organism to another (person to person or from another organism to a person) • Vector—an organism that transfers an infectious disease from one host to another (ex. mosquitoes are a vector for malaria; fleas are a vector for the black plague) • Carrier—a person who carries an infectious disease without actually getting the disease themselves

  3. How Diseases Spread • Diseases are transmitted (spread) in several ways: (cont.) • Indirect transmission—an infectious disease is passed to a person from an inanimate object (desk, doorknob, etc.) • vehicle—an inanimate object that spreads disease; ex. food, water, etc.

  4. How Diseases Spread An outbreak occurs when a larger group of individuals than normal become sick from the same disease in a short period of time. An outbreak becomes an epidemic when people begin to die from the disease. When the epidemic spreads around the world or most of the world, it becomes a pandemic.

  5. How Diseases are Spread Outbreaks, epidemics, and pandemics can be controlled using the appropriate antimicrobial agents (substances that kill or inhibit the growth of the organism or virus causing the outbreak) and, if possible, vaccines to stop the spread of the pathogen.
