How has PDP evolved? • Driven by experiences in mainland Europe in 1920s, 30s, and 40s with extremist regimes • Emphasis on individual rights – the right to control use of ones own data • The “right to be forgotten” • How practical are these ideals in the modern world, and especially in context of Social Media? • Other parts of world more market driven • US – market driven, but also rights of individual. • No overall binding international treaty
