  1. The Origin, Foundation, and Manifestation of the Church Unit 1

  2. Six Models of the Church • The Models of the Church are six ways of seeing the Church in action. • We can never totally know the full extent of the Church. We do, however, have way of studying it that can help us appreciate it more. • 6 Models of the Church – each model will highlight or emphasize a different dimension of the complex mysterious reality of the Church.

  3. Models of the Church 1. Body of Christ- Emphasizes people of Christ. Take from St. Paul’s reference to the Body of Christ. We are to care for each other, celebrate, and worship with one another. 2. Institution- Organized patterns, rules, and social structures that developed to help carry out the Church’s purpose. The hierarchy of authority with Pope, bishops, and priests is the focal point of this model.

  4. Models of the CHurch 3. Sacrament- Visible, physical signs of God’s love. This model includes sacramentals (material objects blessed by the Church to show respect to the Sacraments to increase devotion) as well as the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church. 4. Herald- We are all called to be messengers to proclaim the Good News to all people everywhere (specific heralds would be missionaries and evangelists)

  5. Models of the chUrch 5. Servant- We are all called to serve God by serving others. This can take various forms and can be done as the Church on a institutional level or as individual people. 6. Community of Disciples- Taking on the way of life that Jesus was witness to allowing ourselves to be witness to others. Involves standing up for what is right even when it might conflict with society.

  6. The Church Planned by the father • “‘The Father… determined to call together in a holy Church those who should believe in Christ.’ This ‘family of God’ is gradually formed and takes shape during the stages of human history, in keeping with the Father's plan…This Church was prepared in marvelous fashion in the history of the people of Israel and the old Advance.” CCC 759

  7. Sequence of Events Preparing us for the Church • Jesus’ Ministry: • Proclamation of the Kingdom of God or Reign of God created ideas of royalty in the eyes of Jesus’ followers. • Correction of the followers: Christ referred to the Kingdom as common bread and tiny mustard seeds and the talk of being servants. This is not a idea that merges with the images of royalty the disciples had.

  8. Sequence of Events Preparing us for the Church • Jesus’ Crucifixion, Death and Resurrection: • Jesus’ crucifixion shattered the beliefs of his followers believing that he would deliver them from their plight against the Romans. • One Apostle betrayed him and the others hid for fear that they would be the next victims. • The Resurrection brought renewed hope, faith and joy. • After his Resurrection, Jesus again is with his disciples telling them more of the Kingdom of God, which is to come.

  9. Sequence of Events Preparing us for the Church (Continued) • This time of 40 days is to prepare them for what is to come. • He commands them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait there for the “promise of the Father”. Jesus promises that they will be baptized with the Holy Spirit soon.

  10. Sequence of Events Preparing us for the Church • Jesus’ Ascension: • Jesus ascension was a time of fear and confusion for the followers of Christ. • Jesus’ ascension was his way of showing his trust for his disciples. They were to carry on his mission. They were to preach and teach what he taught while he was with them. The Holy Spirit was to empower them to go forth into the world and preach the “Good News” of Jesus.

  11. Sequence of Events Preparing us for the Church (Continued) • After the Ascension the Church began to form. • As Jesus was sacrament to the world the Church was to be a sign and instrument of Christ- thus God’s- continuing presence in the world. • This lead the Church to become a Sacrament in the world since it was to represent God’s continuing presence.

  12. Sequence of Events Preparing us for the Church • Pentecost (the Birthday of the Church) • On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit empowered the disciples to be the Sacrament of Jesus Christ to the world. • The Church can be understood as the People of God, a community of believers in Jesus. • The Body of Christ, model places emphasis on the members of the Church combining their individual gifts to bring Christ to the world; and to be the temple of the Holy Spirit.

  13. the Church • The Church, is seen as both a sign and an instrument of the Kingdom of God. It is entrusted to carry on Jesus’ work and ministry. • The Church is called to be one cohesive unit with Jesus as the center.

  14. the Church Continues to evolve after Christ • After Pentecost, the Disciples began to preach and teach about Jesus. • Kerygmas – Greek for proclamation • Didaches – Greek for teachings • Most new Christians were converts from Judaism. • They would celebrate the Sabbath on Saturday, and then celebrate the Agape on Sunday. • Believed that the way a person worships indicates how strong a person believes.

  15. the Church Continues to evolve after Christ • The Liturgy Forms. • Prayers and the teachings of Jesus were recalled during the Eucharistic celebration. • Eventually, Christian worship was a combination of the Jewish synagogue service and the Last Supper experience. • It isn’t until after the Temple is destroyed in Jerusalem that the Church identifies themselves as different from the Jewish faith Tradition.

  16. Essential teachings of the Catholic Faith • The term Catholic: • From the Greek “katholikos” meaning “universal”. • First used by Ignatius of Anitoch to describe the unity of the local churches under local bishops (c. 80-120 AD). • Catholic is one of the four marks of the Church in the Nicene Creed. It is considered to be a principal or pillar of our faith. • Catholic is associated with a particular way of being Christian emphasizing the doctrines and practices of the Early Church.

  17. Essential teachings of the Catholic Faith • The term Christian: • Comes from the term “Christos” meaning “Anointed One”. • Indicates a person is a follower of Christ that has been baptized. • Christians in Antioch were the first people to be referenced as Christians.

  18. Essential teachings of the Catholic Faith • The term Church: • Derived from the Greek word “Kyriake” meaning “the Lord’s house” • Can mean many things: • A building where Christians gather to worship. • A specific Christian denomination, such as Anglicans, Lutherans, and so on. • The whole body of Christians • Ecclesiastical Authority- the organization or government of the Church
