Neurosis: sufferers experience high levels of anxiety or tension in managing their daily lives Psychosis: sufferers have lost touch with the real world, experiencing delusions and/or auditory, visual hallucinations ex: paranoia, schizophrenia Anti-Social Personality disorder: sufferers have a habitual pattern of rule breaking and harming others Neurological Disorders: developmental disorders originating from fetal brain abnormalities and/ or chromosome deficiencies ex: autism, down syndrome Mental Disorders

Def'n: a neurodevelopment disorder that results in delays in social interaction and use of language, along with restricted, repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behaviour Diagnosed by the age of 3 Actually 5 disorders known as autism spectrum disorders (ASD) 1 in 1000 births (National Institute of Mental Health) Autism

  4. First classified in 1943 by psychiatrist Dr. Leo Kanner of John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore Wrote a paper The Nervous Child Studied 11 patients All the children lacked interest in other people Term autism comes from the Greek work autos meaning "self" History

Do not show interest in faces, lack eye contact Prefer being alone Passively accept interaction like hugging, cuddling without reciprocating Lack a "theory of mind"- the ability to see things from another person's perspective, acknowledge people's feelings and intentions based on social cues (gestures, facial expressions) May invent imaginary friends, worlds, scenarios Have difficulty self- regulating their behaviour, resulting in crying, verbal outbursts, self-injurious behaviours Prefer consistent routines and environments Social Development

  6. May have oversensitivity or undersensitivity to touch, movement, sights or sound Physical clumsiness, poor body awareness Easily distracted Sensory System

Some remain mute, or communicate in other ways: images, visual clues, sign language, computer Those who do speak use language in unusual ways Use single words only Repeat a mimicked phrases over and over (songs, jingles, ads- a calming activity, the condition is called echolalia) Speak in a monologue rather than "give and take" conversation Communication

Important to diagnose autism and begin treatment as early as possible for the greatest benefit Requires the teamwork of: pediatricians, child psychologists, behaviour analysts, speech therapists, teachers, special education assistants, parents, siblings There is no known cause, nor one "cure-all" treatment Issue: treatment costs $60,000 per year; should the provincial government pay for the child's special educational needs like any healthy child? Treatment

A person with an IQ under 25 Possess unlimited, specific, accurate information and skills in precise fields like math and music "When asked a question within their area of expertise, 99% of the time, the idiot savant will answer correctly" (Dr. Joseph Pearce, Evolution's End) Do not acquire knowledge by learning like we do Incapable of performing life's basic functions (dressing) and may therefore be institutionalized "Austistic- Savant"Historically called "Idiot Savant"
