  1. NTM Stability Modification using LHCD Dale Meade, Bob Granetz, Charles Kessel, S. Jardin… Alcator C-Mod Ideas Forum MIT December 2-6, 2004

  2. NTM Stability Modification using LHCD Background: • Higher bN regimes of interest to burning plasmas may be NTM unstable • LHCD, and RF in general, is a potential tool for controlling NTMs • Critical for AT modes in Burning Plasma experiments Purpose: • Investigate the effectiveness of RF NTM mitigation techniques in high performance plasmas suitable for a burning plasma experiment References: • Bob Granetz Presentation to C-Mod PAC Feb 23, 2004 • Alcator C-Mod LHCD Upgrade Proposal • Alcator C-Mod Five Year Plan • C. D. Warrick, R. J. Buttery, G. Cunningham, et al, Complete stabilization of Neoclassical Tearing Modes with Lower Hybrid Current Drive on COMPASS-D, Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 574, (2000)

  3. NTM Stability Modification using LHCD Experimental Approach Initial Survey Phase (Piggy Back): • monitor for NTM activity in – high performance H-mode discharges – high performance LHCD RS-AT discharges Dedicated Run Phase • pick a case with clear and reproducible NTM activity for a more detailed study of using RF for NTM mitigation – reduce seed island with LHCD or counter-FWCD to keep q0 > 1 – use LHCD to modify delta’ by changing the q profile – use modulated LHCD like Compass-D (Warrick et al) Compare with NTM model predictions
