GPS:SS8CG1- The student will describe the role of citizens under Georgia’s constitution. SS8CG2-The student will analyze the role of the legislative branch in Georgia state government SS8CG3- The student will analyze the role of the executive branch in Georgia state government SS8CG4-The student will analyze the role of the judicial branch in Georgia state-government. WORK SESSION:Guided Reading- Sections 3 and 4 Pages 544-552 Activity Sheet: Basic Legal Terms/ Knowledge of Georgia’s Government Review CLOSING: JUSTICE-What does the word mean or implies to you? HOMEWORK: Complete your activity sheet

Formal Powers and Informal Powers of the Governor appointing people to state boards and executive offices issuing proclamations representing the state in various meetings and events working with legislators to get laws passed guiding state agencies communicating personal position on important issues • Executive: appoints state officials, makes sure laws are enforced • Legislative: sends requests and messages to legislature, vetos bills or signs them into law as necessary, call special session of legislature • Judicial: pardon convicted criminals, appoint state justices

WORK SESSION: Simple machine Gallery: students will look at a variety of pictures and choose what type of machine is in each. Notes: Simple Machines CLOSING: Why do we use machines? WORK SESSION:Scavenger Hunt on Branches of State Government Use information about the Branches of Government, Place this information in the room next door. Students will write this on a graphic organizer. Take the information and match it with the correct branch of State Government. Class Discussion/Groups CLOSING: Review of the three branches of State Government HOMEWORK: Study Vocabulary
