  4. Networking • Before collaboration begins, networking with agencies, organizations, and others is key • Attend association meetings • Jot down individual’s names, titles, and any stories or issues they contributed to the meeting

  5. Trust • Research the topic and the story before approaching the individual • News footage • Newspaper and magazine articles • Request a meeting • Know the information • Have a list of questions • Ask if they are interested in participating in an instructional video

  6. Collaborate • Let the participant tell you their story—this is not Hollywood • Design the questions on the video to guide the story • Give structure and insight for the student by discussing how their story fits into the course(s) you are shooting the video for • Ask for photos and video for the background

  7. Planning • Show the video shoot layout before the day of the shoot, which contains: • Questions they will be asked • Time allotted for each section • Inform them they will need to provide a 30 second or less on their role and background experience • Names and titles of the participants • Opening and closing statements by the moderator • Be open to criticism and changes • Review your video shoot checklist

  8. The Video Shoot • Have a few refreshments on hand • Test lighting, sound, and cameras to participant placement • Have a casual conversation to place them at ease • Run through the script once or twice before the shoot • Shoot according to the time on the video plan • Have a timekeeper with red, yellow, and green cards to signal when to speak, wrap up and stop each segment.

  9. Video Shoot Layout Sheet • Should include: • Names and titles of participants • Time allotted for each segment and total video time • Props needed or provided by participants • Questions asked for each segment • Introduction and closing statements made by moderator

  10. Video Sheet Checklist • Checklist should be tasks that are segmented by: • Prior to day of shoot • Accomplished before participant arrival • During shoot • After the shoot • Required steps to publish the videos
