  2. ESPAÑA • Diverse area (mountains & beaches). • 2 hour ferry ride from Spain to N Africa. The Strait of Gilbraltar (UK) separates Spain and Africa. Ceuta and Melilla are towns in Africa that are actually Spanish territories. • Moors (Islamic people from N Africa) ruled from 711-1492.

  3. ESPAÑA • Many Spanish words that begin with <<al>> are Arabic. • almacén: store • almohada: pillow • albóndiga: meatball

  4. ESPAÑA • King Juan Carlos Alfonso Víctor María(1938-) was appointed king 27/11/75. Serves as Spain’s head of state – does NOT have a direct role in running the country. Serves as an advisor.

  5. ESPAÑA • El Primer Ministro José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero(1960) was sworn in on 17/4/04. He heads the Consejo de Ministros (Cabinet) who is responsible for the daily operations of the government. The Cortes (Parliament) makes the laws of Spain.

  6. ESPAÑA • Almost 1/5 of all Spaniards lives in Andalucía. Andalucía is Spain’s largest producer of olives; Spain grows 1/4 of the world’s olives. Sevillian oranges are also a major export.

  8. ESPAÑA • Los Pirineos (Pyrenees Mts.) stretch over 270 miles with a maximum width of 100 miles. Forms a natural boundary between Spain and France. Spain is Europe’s 2nd most mountainous country – only Switzerland is more mountainous. Skiers paradise!

  9. ESPAÑA • Toledo is about 45 minutes SW of Madrid.

  10. ESPAÑA • Córdoba, a city in Andalucía, is home to La Mezquita, one of the most famous mosques in the world.

  11. ESPAÑA • El Guadalquivir is the only navigable river in Spain, emptying into the Atlantic Ocean. It’s name means great river in Arabic.

  12. ESPAÑA • Sevilla, the capital of Andalucía, is famous for it’s annual festivals: La Semana Santa (Holy Week) and La Feria de Abril (April Fair).

  13. ESPAÑA • Sevilla also features La Giralda, famous tower built in 1196.

  14. ESPAÑA • Antonio GaudÍ (1852-1926) was a famous architect around Barcelona. He began working on La Sagrada Familia in 1883 and was still unfinished when he died in 1926. Currently, work is being completed, but the cathedral remains unfinished.

  15. ESPAÑA • Pablo Picasso (1881-1973): famous for his unique style of painting (melancholy blue period to strange & angry cubism). Blue Period 1901-1904 Cubism 1907-1915

  16. ESPAÑA • Federico García Lorca (1898-1936) is a famous writer. • Andrés Segovia(1893-1987) is a famous musician who performed concerts even after he turned 90 years old.

  17. ESPAÑA • El AVE (Alta Velocidad de España) is the fast train that allows riders to travel from Madrid to Sevilla in 3 hours as opposed to 6 hours by car. While fast (180 mph), it is expensive.

  18. ESPAÑA • La Alhambra (comes from Arabic meaning red or crimson castle), was a military masterpiece in it’s time and the last Moorish stronghold. Beautiful palace, fortress, and gardens. Entry is limited to 8400 visitors daily!

  19. ESPAÑA • Flamenco, representing death, religion, and love, is the style of dance popular in Spain. Introduced by the gypsies.
