Our guesthouse is situated on the Kwazulu Natal coast just 60 kilometers south of Durban.  We are in the lazy town of Umkomaas which derives its name from the Umkomazi river.  Umkomazi is the Zulu word which means Whale cow.  The river was at one time large and deep enough to allow whale cows to swim upriver to calve.  The Shark and Shoal has a magnificent view over the river.

  3. Shark and Shoal Guesthouse is located in the relaxed and rural town of Umkomaas. The town offers visitors a interesting variety of activities, such as golfing, cycling, kayaking, fishing, diving, and more.  Or you can just enjoy the views or spend lazy days on the beach. Our Umkomaas Accommodation is the perfect base to explore the world famous Aliwal Shoal.

  4. Diving in Umkomaas So what can you do when visiting Umkomaas? Well first and foremost our little town is probably best known as the recreational scuba diving Mecca on the South Coast of KZN.
