  1. Hungarians in Athens

  2. Igaly Diána • Skeet • Tiny disks are being shot off into the sky. She/he who shots down the most disks out of 100 shootings will win the competition. After the second series ( i.e. 25X2 shootings)with only three targets missed she came up to the second place. All the shootings from the third series were faultless (hit the disks). Thus she entered the sixth final. • At the end where there were only four shootings left, merely one would have been suffice to win the competition. But she didn’t miss any. Well done! At the age of 39 she became an Olimpic Champion.

  3. Nagy Tímea The first epée-fencing championship was held in 1989. In Sydney, 2000 AD, she managed to win the Gold Medal. After that she wanted to be a mother for the second time. Therefore she gave birth to her second child, but she had never given up the idea of a glorious comeback. Her dream to become a champion came true, when at 34 she managed to fight herself into the Olimpic Team. What more, on the second day she managed to become a CHAMPION winning the 150th gold medal for Hungary.(since 1896)

  4. Vörös Zsuzsanna • Pentathlon • Three-times champion before she set out having the best chances to win. Out of 81 matches in fencing she won 19. • In swimming after 200 m her advantage was huge. The most uncertain part of pentathlon is the horse-riding. She made only two mistakes at jumping over the hurdles. • 3000m running can be very tiring. She was ahead of the others with 41 seconds and ran the last 500 m with Hungary’s national flag in her hand, to the joy of her fans and became an Olimpic Champion.

  5. Janics Natasa • Kayak / Canoe - 500 m Women • She was born in Jugoslavia 22 years before the Olimpics in Athens (2004.) In Sydney 2000, she managed to occupy the fourth place. • At the age of 17 she was trained in Hungary by a Hungarian coach. She had got her Hungarian citizenship some months before the Olimpics started and thus the International Olimpic Committee allowed her to represent Hungary in Athens. • Before the Olimpic Games 2004, she won the European Championship as well. • She won the finals in Athens with an enormous lead. The fan’s favourite by now, she came back home as most popular Hungarian sportswoman. • Shorlty after her race she said: „I’m the happiest person in the world.”

  6. Janics Natasa &Kovács Katalin • Kayak-canoe - 500 m Double /Women • We Hungarians cannot do well without the names: Kovács. • Let me explain: • Olimpic Champions • 1992: Antal Kovács (judo) 1996: István Kovács (boxing) 2000. Ágnes Kovács (swimming) 2004. Katalin Kovács (canoe) First defeating the Hungarian World Champion and then the Hungarian Champion pair they got free way to the Olimpic Games in Athens. One hour after Natasa won the Gold Medal in individual race, she had to paddle again together with her former adversary Katalin Kovács. And it was they who passed the finish-line first.

  7. Majoros István • Graeco- Roman Wrestling 55 kg : Majoros István • Firstly, he had to lose some weight (12 kg in a month) • The fourth week was a real nightmare: three workouts per day, no food, only a few drops of water during the day. He had to get rid of 2l of water on a single workout without having to drink more than 2,5 dl to compensate the losses. • Secondly,he had to recover from a serious injury. Before the competition, however, he realised he had a slipped disk. Thirdly, he had to focus on wrestling only. It was not quite as easy as that for him, because his father had died just a few months before. In spite of all these drawbacks and hardships, the 30 year old wrestler worked miracles. After legging behind a bit in points, he got the upperhand on his four successive opponents and thus he won all four fights.

  8. Férfi Kajak Négyes • Kayak/Canoe Quartet – Men 1000m • Kammerer Zoltán, Storcz Botond,Vereckei Ákos, Horváth Gábor) • Kayak canoe has been proved lately to be the most succesful Hungarian sport-branch. • Before preparing to Athens, they were given the best chances for winning one of the gold-medals. • They took tha lead from the very beginning and won with a huge advantage. On the last metres before entering the finish line, Kammerer even stopped rowing, then Vereckei did the same and throw his oars away. Then they immedialtely turned into water in order to express their exitement. Thousands of spectators applanuded them fervently. They have never witnessed something like that before. First they took the lead (3:0) then 7:5, but in the last 13 minutes our guys plucked up courage and fought like lions scoring 3 more goals to the serb goalkeeper.
