  1. Co-operation Success Stories & Future Visions for Cloud Computing Andrea Manieri Echogrid Industry Manager Engineering Ingegneria Informatica s.p.a.

  2. Industrial Cooperation Introduction on perspectives from Industry in the EchoGRID Roadmap for EU-China Cooperation in Grid. • EU-China Co-operation Success Stories, Gilbert Kalb, • Cognitive Systems using clouds, Ignacio Soler, Atos Origin Spain • China Mobile Communications, Leitao Guo, China Mobile • Toward a service-oriented economy, the NESSIGRID perspective,Andrea Manieri Engineering Ingegneria Informatica s.p.a. (20 minutes) • Interactive Panel Discussion

  3. Echogrid - five items for collaboration • New programming paradigms • Grid architectures • Grid management • Virtual organisations • The component model • Workflow – business processes

  4. New Programming paradigms • Too much details exposed to programmers • Too complex model to learn and to reuse • Workflow based on XML, not suitable for humans, or GUIs not scaling at large numbers • Echogrid collaboration roadmap suggests : • To explore Chemical programming, such as HOCL, due to the non-deterministic aspect of computation (reaction) and high expressiveness • To explore Autonomic element programming, very similar to the agent-oriented programming paradigm in the heart of the programming model, due to the capability to support data resource aggregation tasks with a property of best-effort • To explore pipe-based programming, such as GSML proposed by ICT/CAS, due to the concept of resource virtualization and abstraction, loosely coupled component architecture and high-level reusability.

  5. Grid architectures • Grids are too complex: SOA and WSA will reduce such conceptual complexity, what about interoperability? • Current Grids are not suitable for Web2.0 concepts • Grids vs Cloud • Echogrid collaboration roadmap suggests : • To continue exploring the ways for reducing complexity and improve interoperability by mean of Service concept (SOA, SOI, SaaS, etc) • To concentrate on better and scalable Resource Management tools • To evolve the GRIA and XService solution to be able to compete at large scale with proprietary solutions • To investigate the Cloud concept and the relations with existing grids

  6. Grid Management • Large scale grids difficult to manage • Multi-domain grids suffer from missing interoperability and trust • Other cross-issues • a) Local provision considering security and privacy issues. • b) On-demand access to content and adaptation of the content to context (be also users, devices, location and policies) • c) An ecosystem of autonomic, self managed systems. • e) Capabilities of handling very large data volumes with long term digital curation • f) Implementing dynamic business models with clear accountability and pricing issues • g) Economy of scale considering factors like cost, GreenIT, energy, cooling • Echogrid collaboration roadmap suggests • To promote Regulation around Grids with emphasis on Certification, Accounting rules, establishing trust domains. • To reinforce effort on standardization of interfaces and protocols. • To explores solutions for Management of Fault, Configuration, Accounting, Performance, Security and Dynamic capabilities dependent on resource, environment or the object.

  7. Virtual Organisations • For the functionalities, current VO lacks of: • Supporting from the underlying OS and Grid middleware • Supporting of commercial applications • Underlying administration facilities for VO bootstrapping • Current VO lacks some good properties for better resource sharing and better user usages: • Consuming too much resources, heavy-weighted; • QoS guarantees • Dynamic mechanisms • Scalability • Echogrid collaboration roadmap suggests • To provide a clear definition of VO framework on the functionalities and management infrastructures • To investigate advanced functionalities of VO cross platform VO and high efficient VO should be provided to the users • To explore autonomic capabilities for full life-cycle management of VO

  8. The Component Model • Component-based approaches allows reusability and improve adaptation. However some limitations occur in • Integrating with SOA concept for a comprehensive model • mechanisms to support adaptation and reconfiguration of components during execution • Too much complexity for adoption in business enviroment • Echogrid collaboration roadmap suggests • To clarify the relationships among component-based and service-based models • To explore new features of component models such as: • Lightweight autonomic support of grid applications • Run-time Service composition • Platform independence • Aspect-orientation • Quality assurance at design time

  9. Workflow – Business Processes • Too many workflow systems and languages • Still a gap between business process and implemented workflow • Difficult to compare and evaluate different workflow system • Difficult to optimise workflows • Echogrid collaboration roadmap suggests • To reinforce investigation on composition of services • To cross-fertilise the workflow and grids communities • To investigate interoperability or integration of existing workflow models and tools

  10. Which perspectives? • How much the Echogrid proposed roadmap meet Industry requirements? • How much Cloud Computing “buzzword” match with Echogrid proposed roadmap? • How much Industry requirements are addressed from the “perceived” Cloud computing?
