  1. Zentralblatt MATH Searching for Mathematics with Zentralblatt MATH Overview and Outlook Bernd Wegner, Heinz Kröger Zentralblatt MATH, FIZ Karlsruhe Mathematisches Institut, TU Berlin

  2. Overview • The reference database Zentralblatt MATH • The LIMES production system • Zentralblatt search facilities • Zentralblatt linking facilities

  3. Part 1 • The reference database Zentralblatt MATH

  4. Zentralblatt MATHEditorial Council • European Mathematical Society • FIZ Karlsruhe • Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften • Editor - in - Chief • Co-operational units • Publisher: Springer-Verlag

  5. The Role of Reviewing Services • Documentation and evaluation of the mathematical literature world-wide • Provision of an easily accessible, searchable database • Portal site to published articles and books • Access facility to document delivery • Tools for preparation of bibliographies andreference linking • Identification facility for mathematical publications • Let us look at how Zentralblatt MATH fits in here:

  6. Zentralblatt MATHAims • Comprehensive information on mathematical publications • Bibliographic precision • Reviews given by external reviewers • Classification according to subjects, additional keywords for database retrieval • Links to other electronic sources in Math • Convenient search menus for different levels of expertise

  7. Zentralblatt MATHScope • Pure and applied mathematics • Mathematical physics • Theoretical computer science • Theoretical mechanics • Operations research • Financial mathematics • Statistics, mathematical biology • Systems and control theory • Coding and Communication

  8. Zentralblatt MATHFigures • Total number of papers reviewed in Zentralblatt MATH since 1931 >2.200.000 • Number of papers reviewed in JfM (1868 – 1930) 80.000 • Number of reviewers > 9.000 • Number of Journals covered > 2.300

  9. Part 2 • The LIMES production system

  10. LIMESLarge Infrastructure in Mathematics - Enhanced Services • Fifth Framework Programme of the EU "Access to Research Infrastructures” • EU-funding: April 2000 - March 2004 • Scientific Directors: • Rolf Jeltsch, ex-President EMS • Bernd Wegner, Editor-in-Chief Zbl MATH • Coordinator: • Michael Jost, FIZ Karlsruhe, Berlin Dept.

  11. LIMESPartners FIZ Karlsruhe, Coordinator, DE Cellule MathDoc, FR Eidetica, NL SIBA, University of Lecce, IT Tech. Knowledge Centre & Library of Denmark, DK University of Santiago de Compostela, ES Hellenic Mathematical Society, GR Technical University Berlin, DE European Mathematical Society, EU

  12. LIMESDistributed Input • Development of a new input and database production system (in operation since 01.04.2004) • Capable for accepting input from distributed partners • Allowing for corrections and modifications from distributed sites • Implementing shared responsibilities • Portable to other services and disciplines like • Education in mathematics • Mathematical Logics • Computer Science • Physics

  13. LIMESQuality of Data and Retrieval • New models, techniques and tools for the enhancement of data and a more sophisticated retrieval • Author and Source identification • Development of new and enhanced retrieval features for the database engine • Support for distributed servers: • multilingual interfaces • access control management • update procedures

  14. LIMES Electronic Editorial Units • Arrange the workflow using electronic means as much as possible • Integrated access to shared resources (reviewer database) • Apply artificial intelligence concepts for semi-automatic indexing • Integrate available metadata automatically • Two prototypes • NAIS developed by SIBA in Lecce • TEQUILA developed by DTV in Copenhagen

  15. Part 3 • Zentralblatt search facilities

  16. Search menus • We offer three menus for different levels of expertise, and a citation checker • Standard search form • Advanced search form • Command mode search form • Citation checker

  17. Search fields • Author • Title • Basic Index • Classification • Source • Reviewer • Zentralblatt Number • Language • Document Type

  18. Database tools • Journals Database • MSC (Classification Scheme) • Reviewer Database (LIMES internal) • Lookup system (Citation search form)

  19. Part 4 • Zentralblatt MATH linking facilities

  20. Links from ZBL • Links to items of the bibliographic information (you may, e.g. click on an author, a reviewer, classification code or citations to generate a new search) • Links to electronic resources • Links to digital archives

  21. Navigation with ZBL • Reference links • Provision of metadata for digitization projects • Interaction with Encyclopaedias, Handbooks und Bibliographies (to be realized)

  22. Integration in Digitizing und Archiving Projects • Integration of Zentralblatt MATH (and JFM) into the access and navigation structures of • WDML (World Digital Mathematics Library) With its European branch DML-EU • ERAM (FDM project) • EMANI (Electronic Mathematics Archiving Network Initiative) • Look-up tools for the generation of reference links from digitized offers • Recommendation of the WDML planning group DML-EU

  23. Integration in the production and promotion of RusDML • RusDML – core archive of digitized Russian journals in mathematics • journalwise provision of metadata of Zentralblatt MATH and of FDM • Implementation of a fast access to the journals • Range of articles covered is from 1868 to present • Access to the reviews also for users with minor knowledge of the Russian language • Linking of the database with the digitized items • Permanent access to the archive in additon to the Russian-British OPAC

  24. Linking to free offers of full texts in EMIS • Electronic library within European Mathematical Information Service • Host for free full text offers of core journals in mathematics • More than 60 journals • More than 10.000 articles • Immediate access to the journals via Zentralblatt MATH • Linking between full texts and database entries • Links from the bibliographies to database entries • Adaption of the production of metadata to the needs of Zentralblatt MATH – direct adoption

  25. Cooperations of Zentralblatt MATH with systems for full text supply • Generating links from the database entries to document delivery services – direct transfer of bibliographical data • TIB Hannover, SUB Göttingen, JASON, SIBA Lecce, REBIUN (Spain), HEAL-Link (Greece) • Delivery terms are determined by the vendor. • Integration of the database into local systems, which offer their service only to local customers. • Combined agreements for database access and full text supply in developing countries – CubaMATH, Southern Africa • Integration into projects for the integrated access to electronis offers (EULER, EASE and others.) • Links to Publishers.
