  4. ExampleThe Open Ended QuestionWhat lesson did Juan and Pepe learn in the story “Danger on the Guayas River?” Why was the lesson important? Use two details from the story to support your answer.

Start With a Clear Beginning That Restates The Question Correct Juan and Pepe learned an important lesson in the story “Danger on the Guayas River.” They learned that the Guayas River river flows in two different directions depending on the tides. Incorrect They learned not to swim with sharks.

  6. PARAPHRASE SUPPORTS(PUT IDEAS IN YOUR OWN WORDS) Direct Quote - Incorrect • “Night fell. The boys could no longer see the dorsal fins, but they knew they were there. Not wanting to attract the shark’s attention, they stood very still.” Paraphrased - Correct • It was night time and the boys could not see the shark’s fins, but they knew the sharks were still there so they stood still.

  8. Be Sure to Provide 1 More TEXT BASED SUPPORT Than is Required. REASON If one support is inaccurate, the opportunity for two supports to be assessed is still available. SAMPLE - One SUPPORT #1– Juan and Pepe learned the important lesson of knowing the direction of the tides. The boys tied their boat to an oar and when they returned to the place where they left the boat it was gone with the tide. *NOTE: Check to see that all supports are different and not a reworded version of the previously stated support.

USE TEXT-BASED SUPPORTS SUPPORT 2 – Juan and Pepe “always waited on the sandbar until the tide rose and the river changed direction, so the current could help carry them back home.” – paraphrase. SUPPORT 3 – The story tells of one day when the boys should have been returning home they saw an old fisherman, Flaco, and they decided to swim out to meet him. They changed their routine and did not know the current and how it would affect their ability to return home.

  10. End With a Closing StatementThat Summarizes the Main Idea. SAMPLE As you can see, Juan and Pepe learned an important lesson in the story “Danger on the Guayas River.” They learned to keep track of the tides, so that when it is time to return home, their boat is still there and they can safely return home.
