Jenni Calder (Historian): ‘The New Brunswick and Nova Scotia Company, formed in 1831, acquired 550,000 acres in York County north of the Bay Fundy, and recruited settlers in the West Highlands…..The company claimed to have spent three years and £80,000 on preparing for settlement…. The crossed the Atlantic, taking 43 days to find a house awaiting with 5 acres of land cleared and painted.’

Emigration to Canada • A location Scots moved to. • The development of ships allowed Canada to be accessible easily. • Unlike Australia, New Zealand and India, emigration to Canada did not take months aboard a disease ridden ship. • You could return from Canada. • Landlords paid for them to go.

  4. Canada • Landlords have several reasons why they wanted to get them off the land. • Landlords believed that the highlands was ‘over-populated’ and they wanted to make the land more profitable. • Eventually the opinion in the 1850s-1860s was that the highlanders should be helped.
